The 2025 MLB Draft is widely regarded as a year dominated by high school shortstops and college pitchers. While there may not be an abundance of clear-cut superstar prospects at the very top, this draft class is notable for its depth and the even distribution of talented prospects across various positions. Some teams strategically saved budget in the first round to aggressively select high school prospects or additional pitching talent in the second and third rounds.
2025 MLB Draft Structure and Process
- The draft was held in July 2026 in the United States, with amateur baseball prospects from across North America selected by all 30 MLB teams.
- The draft followed a 20-round format, with each team making one selection per round.
- The top six picks in the first round were determined by a draft lottery. The remaining order was set by a combination of the previous season’s regular-season standings (in reverse order), postseason results, and revenue-sharing factors.
- Teams exceeding the luxury tax threshold, such as the LA Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Mets, had their first-round picks pushed back by 10 slots. Despite this, they succeeded in acquiring college-ready pitchers and infielders.
- Teams like the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles focused on securing pitchers, catchers, and center-line talent in the early rounds.
Top College Prospects
- Drew Burress (Georgia Tech)
- Joey Volchko (Stanford)
- Justin Lebron (Alabama)
- Roch Cholowsky (UCLA)
These players are considered top candidates for the first round due to their strong offensive skills, defensive abilities, and overall athleticism.
Top High School Prospects
- Jacob Lombard
- Grady Emerson
- Tyler Spangler
High school shortstops and pitchers were actively selected, reflecting teams’ long-term development strategies.
College Pitchers
- College pitchers were favored in the mid-to-late first round for their potential to reach the majors quickly. Some are even expected to debut during the 2026 MLB season.
Draft Strategies
- Many teams selected players with lower signing bonus demands in the first round, then targeted high-risk, high-reward prospects in the second and third rounds.
- There was a clear trend of teams using their budgets strategically to maximize the overall value of their draft classes.
2025 MLB Draft Highlights
- Shortstops: Over 10 high school and college shortstops were selected in the first round alone, highlighting the depth of infield prospects this year.
- Pitchers: College right-handed and left-handed pitchers were heavily targeted from the mid-to-late first round, especially those proven in strong conferences like the SEC and ACC.
- Outfielders/Catchers: Some power-hitting outfielders and college catchers were also selected in the first and second rounds, reflecting teams’ focus on boosting offensive potential.
Overall, the 2026 MLB Draft was characterized by a deep pool of prospects, balanced positional distribution, and creative budget management by teams seeking both immediate contributors and long-term upside.

Background
Eli Willits grew up in a baseball family. His father, Reggie Willits, is a former Major League player who played six seasons with the LA Angels and later served as a first base coach for the New York Yankees and as a coach for the University of Oklahoma. His older brother, Jaxson Willits, also plays baseball for the University of Oklahoma. Naturally exposed to baseball from a young age, Eli has shown outstanding athleticism and baseball instincts since childhood.
Before turning pro, he led Fort Cobb-Broxton High School to six Oklahoma Class B state championships over three years (three in fall, three in spring). In his 2025 senior season, he posted an overwhelming batting average of .516, with 9 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 48 stolen bases. In 2024, he represented the USA 18U national team in international competition, recording a .345 on-base percentage and 4 RBIs.
In the 2025 draft, although he was originally scheduled to graduate in 2026, he entered the draft a year early through early graduation and class reclassification. While many teams considered LSU pitcher Cade Anderson and high school shortstop Ethan Holliday as top candidates, the Washington Nationals selected Willits first overall, highly valuing his comprehensive potential and growth prospects.
Scouting Report
According to scouting reports, Willits is evaluated as follows on the 20-80 scale:
- Hitting: 60
- Power: 45
- Running: 60
- Arm: 55
- Fielding: 55
- Overall: 60
He is praised for his excellent contact ability, strike zone management, wide defensive range, quick reflexes, and strong arm. His power is currently average, but with further physical development and training in the pros, it is expected to improve. Scouts note, “He may not have the single best tool, but he is the most complete high school infielder overall.”

2025 MLB Draft Team-by-Team Analysis
Washington Nationals
- 1st Overall Pick: Eli Willits (SS)
- A high school shortstop highly rated for his defensive reliability, athleticism, and offensive upside. He is expected to be a future cornerstone of the infield. The pick also offered bonus pool savings, making it a successful selection from a budget management perspective.
- Overall Strategy: Focused on long-term, high-upside prospects rather than immediate contributors in the early rounds. Balanced acquisition of high school and college pitchers in the mid-to-late rounds.
Los Angeles Dodgers
- Pitching Depth: The Dodgers prioritized college and high school pitchers in the early rounds, further strengthening their minor league pitching depth. Building on recent years of success in pitcher development, the 2026 draft strategy emphasized long-term rotation stability.
- Utility Players: In the mid-to-late rounds, the Dodgers selected several versatile players capable of handling multiple positions, increasing roster flexibility.
Chicago Cubs
- Balanced Picks (Outfield/Infield): The Cubs selected athletic outfielders and infielders early, aiming to add depth to their future lineup.
- Pitching Prospects: Acquired several high-upside pitchers in later rounds to strengthen the long-term minor league system.
Atlanta Braves
- 22nd Overall Pick: Tate Sauthier (HS SS): A high school shortstop with strong defensive skills, athleticism, and offensive potential, projected as a long-term starting infielder.
- Pitcher and Catcher Depth: The Braves focused on both pitchers and catchers in the early rounds, aiming to reinforce positional depth across the roster.
Los Angeles Angels
- 2nd Overall Pick: Tyler Bremner (RHP): A college pitcher with a fastball topping 98 mph, plus an excellent changeup and slider. Considered MLB-ready, he is expected to bolster the rotation quickly.
- Mixed Strategy: The Angels balanced college pitchers in the early rounds with high-upside high school prospects later, aiming to rebuild while also improving immediate roster strength.
Boston Red Sox
- Pitching-Focused Draft: Selected proven college pitchers from the SEC, such as Kyson Witherspoon (15th overall), to secure immediate contributors.
- Infield Depth: Targeted several infielders in the later rounds to enhance future infield competition.
Baltimore Orioles
- Catcher/Shortstop Focus: Invested early picks in catchers and shortstops, strengthening the team’s long-term defensive stability up the middle.
- Balanced Outfield/Pitching: Maintained depth by selecting both outfielders and pitchers in the later rounds.
The 2026 MLB Draft was marked by the dominance of high school shortstops and college pitchers. High school shortstops, despite their youth, were highly valued for their athleticism, defensive ability, and long-term upside, leading to a strong presence in the early rounds. On the other hand, college pitchers were seen as more polished and closer to major league readiness, making them attractive options for teams seeking immediate impact. This dual focus on both future potential and instant contribution was one of the defining features of this year’s draft.
Each team displayed a distinct draft strategy. Some organizations prioritized college players who could help the big-league club right away, while others focused on long-term development by selecting a large number of high-upside high school prospects. There were also teams that targeted specific positions to strengthen organizational depth. Overall, these choices reflected each franchise’s philosophy and needs, as clubs sought to balance short-term results with long-term growth.
Another notable trend was the efficient management of bonus pools. Many teams saved money in the early rounds by selecting players willing to sign for below-slot bonuses, then used the savings to take chances on high-risk, high-reward prospects in the later rounds.
