The film opens 17 years earlier at the secret InGen facility on Saint-Exupéry Island. Scientist Williams (Adam Roxley) enters a containment area for mutant dinosaurs with his colleagues. A Snickers wrapper is sucked into the door, causing a malfunction that releases Distortus Rex. Williams fails to escape and is eaten by D-Rex.

Five years after dinosaurs returned to the mainland, climate change has pushed them toward extinction, and humanity has lost interest. The surviving dinosaurs exist only in tropical regions near the equator, off-limits to humans.

Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), a ParkerGenix pharmaceutical sales rep, is stuck in traffic as an Apatosaurus dies in the road. He is on his way to meet former special forces operative Jora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson). Krebs asks Jora for help with a rescue mission, and together with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), they meet at a soon-to-close dinosaur museum to discuss the mission.

Krebs’s goal is to enter Saint-Exupéry Island and collect samples from Mosasaurus, Titanosaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus to develop life-saving drugs. Jora, Henry, and Krebs travel to Paramaribo to meet team leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), who has a tragic history with Jora. Other team members include Bobby Atwater (Ed Skrein), Nina (Philippine Velge), and Leclerc (Bécher Sylvain). Duncan demands Krebs accept his terms, and the team briefly debates the moral implications of possibly killing dinosaurs.

Suddenly, Mosasaurus attacks and capsizes the boat. Javier narrowly survives, and Ruben sends a distress signal. Duncan’s team locates and rescues the family, but a pack of Spinosaurus, cooperating with Mosasaurus, attacks the boat. Bobby is dragged away by Spinosaurus, and Teresa, trying to call for help, falls into the water during a struggle with Krebs. Javier and the others follow. Jora, pursued by Mosasaurus, successfully collects a sample with a dart and parachutes to safety. Duncan deliberately grounds the boat on the island’s shore, and everyone makes landfall.

The next day, the family encounters a river. Dolores runs off, and Teresa follows, discovering a sleeping T-Rex. When T-Rex awakens, the family flees on a raft, narrowly escaping.
