Baseball Kim Do-yeong Bio, Stats, Career, Record

Kia Tigers’ franchise batter Kim Do-yeong achieved the youngest-ever 30 home run–30 stolen base season in 2024, putting on a dominant all-around performance in hitting, defense, and baserunning to win the regular season Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

As the central figure behind the Kia Tigers’ unified championship (regular season plus Korean Series), he is considered the top MLB prospect, but a left hamstring injury suffered while baserunning on Opening Day of the 2025 season became the source of his troubles, and he endured a slump along with a 50 percent pay cut.

Hamstring injuries carry a high risk of recurrence once suffered, so he ended his season early and spent about three months minimizing movement to focus on muscle recovery.

Returning in 2026 as “the second coming of Lee Jong-beom,” he poured out record after record, including the youngest-ever 40 home run-100 RBI-100 run season, and swept the MVP award and Golden Glove.

If his health holds up, he is a talent MLB itself covets, with military service the only issue left outstanding for KBO’s top star, baseball player Kim Do-yeong.

What about Kim Do-yeong’s errors & defensive ability?

While he has shown tremendous talent at the plate, defense remains an area where he still shows a lot to be desired. Unlike his top-tier hitting in the league, he ranks first in the league in errors committed, and his third base defense still has much room for improvement. Resolving the error problem will likely be necessary for his future move to MLB as well.

Kia’s Kim Do-yeong salary

  • 2026 salary: 250 million won (down 50%)

After rising 100 percent from 50 million won in 2023 to 100 million won in 2024, he crossed the 100-million-won threshold for the first time. His salary may seem smaller than expected, but in his first professional year he had not yet shown starter-level performance, and in his second year he missed the first two months to injury and did not play a full season. He raised his momentum to 500 million won in 2025, but endured a 50 percent cut in 2026 due to injury.

(For reference, the highest fourth-year salary on record is 390 million won, and the highest fifth-year salary on record is 550 million won, both held by Lee Jung-hoo.)

Kia’s Kim Do-yeong baseball story

Born October 2, 2003, in his hometown of Gwangju, he grew up through Gwangju Daesung Elementary School, Dongsung Middle School, and Dongsung High School, developing into a nationally recognized prospect. From his high school days he earned the nickname “the second coming of Lee Jong-beom,” and over three years of high school baseball he posted an overwhelming record: a .434 batting average, 56 runs, and 41 stolen bases.

He reportedly started out going to watch baseball with his father, then found playing catch fun and was recommended to try Little League. In elementary school he briefly pitched but had poor control, so he switched to shortstop, a position he found appealing because it carries responsibility for every fielder.

He first began making a name for himself in his second year of high school, when he won the hits, runs, and stolen base titles simultaneously and posted an OPS of 1.139, starting to become known as a five-tool hitter-runner. Despite this, he nearly became a Hanwha player rather than a Kia player.

Gwangju Dongsung High School statistics

  • 2019 (1st year): 18 games, 27 at-bats, 8 hits (0 home runs), 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases, batting average .296, OPS .737
  • 2020 (2nd year): 23 games, 92 at-bats, 42 hits (1 home run), 15 RBI, 22 stolen bases, batting average .457, OPS 1.171
  • 2021 (3rd year): 21 games, 79 at-bats, 36 hits (1 home run), 17 RBI, 17 stolen bases, batting average .456, OPS 1.139
  • 3-year combined: 62 games, 198 at-bats, 86 hits (2 home runs), 34 RBI, 41 stolen bases, batting average .434, OPS 1.100

In his third year of high school he grew another level, and with fellow Gwangju Jinheung High School pitcher Moon Dong-ju (now with Hanwha) also in the mix, the Kia Tigers, who held the first-round regional pick, were torn. With cautionary precedents like the draft failures of Ryu Geo-na and Oh Geo-jeong in mind, the club agonized over choosing between the 155 km/h Moon Dong-ju and the “seven-tool” shortstop Kim Do-yeong.

Initially, general manager Cho Gye-hyeon and the scouting staff worried under the maxim that “baseball is a pitcher’s game.” At the time there were concerns about the accuracy and fluidity of his throwing mechanics, but after much deliberation they concluded that a fielder with such outstanding athletic ability was unlikely to come along again, and decided on Kim Do-yeong just three days before the deadline. He signed with Kia for a franchise-record position player signing bonus of 400 million won.

The start of rivalry with Moon Dong-ju

  • 2022 (Kia, age 19, 3B): 103 games, batting average .237, on-base percentage .312, slugging percentage .362, OPS .674, wRC+ 90.7, WAR 1.75
  • 2023 (Kia, age 20, 3B): 84 games, batting average .303, on-base percentage .371, slugging percentage .453, OPS .824, wRC+ 134.4, WAR 3.76
  • 2024 (Kia, age 21, 3B): 141 games, batting average .347, on-base percentage .420, slugging percentage .647, OPS 1.067, wRC+ 172.5, WAR 8.59
  • 2025 (Kia, age 22, 3B): 30 games, batting average .309, on-base percentage .361, slugging percentage .582, OPS .943, wRC+ 152.4, WAR 1.33

He was selected first overall by the Kia Tigers in the 2022 KBO Rookie Draft and signed for a 400 million won bonus. In exhibition games he hit over .400 and made his debut as the Opening Day leadoff hitter and third baseman, showing a presence unusual for a rookie.

His first professional season fell short of expectations (batting average .237, OPS .674, wRC+ 90.7), but after returning from injury in 2023 he posted a .303 average with 8 stolen bases, proving his growth potential. In 2024 he made an explosive leap across hitting, power, baserunning, and defense, establishing himself as the best player in the KBO League.

In 2024, appearing in 141 games, he hit .347 with 38 home runs, 109 RBI, 143 runs, and 40 stolen bases, achieving the historic feat of becoming the youngest player ever to reach 30 home runs-30 stolen bases in KBO history. He swept both the MVP award and the Golden Glove and led the Kia Tigers to a unified championship; notably, he also hit for the cycle on July 23, proving his hitting ability.

His breakout in the 2024 season came as he raised his launch angle, turning what had previously been many line-drive balls into home runs; as of Liberation Day (August 15) he ranked third in batting average, second in home runs, and fifth in stolen bases, emerging as a top-tier league player across every hitting category. His greatest strength as a player is his outstanding speed; despite batting right-handed, he boasts an astonishing time of 3.9 seconds to first base.

(Note: Shohei Ohtani, batting left-handed, reaches first base in 4.09 seconds, the fastest in MLB.)

On August 15, 2024, Liberation Day, he recorded the youngest-ever, fewest-games 30-30 season, announcing his ascension as the heir to “the wind” (a nickname tradition tracing back to Lee Jong-beom). The highly anticipated 2025 season proved difficult, as a hamstring injury limited him to just 30 games, but he rebounded in 2026 with 40 home runs and now stands as the leading MLB prospect for the next posting window.

Even Lee Jung-hoo, who moved to the San Francisco Giants, has called Kim Do-yeong the true heir to “the wind.” A classic five-tool player, he receives top-of-the-league evaluations across hitting, power, baserunning, defense, and arm strength. American scouting reports, including from FanGraphs, have assessed him as showing “above-average athleticism, power, speed, and defense across the board,” and project that he could hit 20 to 25 or more home runs even in MLB.

Kia’s Kim Do-yeong military service exemption

Although he has emerged as the league’s best player, one disappointment is that he was not selected for the national team at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games and missed out on a gold medal. After suffering an ankle injury while baserunning on April 2, 2023, he was unable to return to the field until June 9, when the final roster was announced, and ultimately failed to make the national team.

(Given his standout performance in 2024, it is all the more regrettable that injury kept him out of the Asian Games.)

As he was born in 2003, he does not need to enlist as long as he resolves his military service obligation by the 2030 Asian Games. The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games mark his first opportunity for a Kim Do-yeong military exemption, and he will also be eligible for the 2030 Doha Asian Games as a player born in 2003. Additionally, good news for baseball fans is that with baseball adopted as an official event at the 2028 LA Olympics, he now has three chances to officially resolve his military service issue as an Arts and Sports Personnel.

Kim Do-yeong’s MLB prospects: evaluations from the U.S.

Thanks to his outstanding 2024 performance, he ranked 6th on FanGraphs’ international prospect list. Some U.S. scouts rate him even higher than An Woo-jin and Kim Hye-seong. Kang Jung-ho, the first KBO player to reach MLB, has said that if Kim Do-yeong can establish his own consistent rhythm and routine, he can definitely succeed.

His ultimate dream as a baseball player is reportedly to have his number retired by the Kia Tigers. He has also said he wants to be a player who can introduce baseball to people unfamiliar with the sport. Saying he will work hard to become a role model as a baseball player, fans are encouraged to continue supporting his growth.

Kia’s Kim Do-yeong schedule

In the 2024 season, he fell short of the 40-40 challenge but wrote new KBO history by finishing with 38 home runs and 40 stolen bases. For this he won the Golden Glove, MVP, and titles for most slugging percentage and most runs, capping off his best year yet. After clearing the injury hurdle in 2025, in 2026 he wrote another page in Korean professional baseball history with the youngest-ever 40 home run-100 RBI-100 run season.

As the player representing Korean baseball, fans are encouraged to keep watching to see how far he will grow.
