Kang Haneul ’s Filmography and Debut Story

Kang Haneul was born in Busan and grew up in an artistic family. His father is a stage actor and his mother is a vocal trainer, so he naturally developed a dream of performing on stage. For high school, he moved to Seoul by himself and transferred to the Department of Music and Drama at Seoul National High School of Traditional Arts. To pay for his tuition, he worked part-time jobs while dedicating himself to acting practice. He then entered Chung-Ang University’s Department of Theater and Film, gaining experience on various theater stages.

In 2007, at the age of 17, he made his debut in the KBS2 drama My Mom, Super Mom, beating odds of 800:1. Afterwards, he stood out in musicals such as Spring Awakening and Thrill Me.

Kang Haneul solidified his image as a youth star by playing the cheerful high school student Lee Hyo-shin in The Heirs, and won viewers’ empathy with his convincing portrayal of the complex emotions and growth of office worker Jang Baek-gi in Misaeng: Incomplete Life.

In the film Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, he played the poet Yun Dong-ju, even shaving his head for the role, and deeply conveyed the pain and anguish of youth, earning high praise. Despite being a low-budget film, Kang Haneul’s sincere performance led to both commercial success and critical acclaim, and he impressed audiences by delivering lines in Japanese himself.

In Twenty, he realistically depicted the worries of freshman college student Kyung-jae Kim, a slightly awkward but relatable character, and his chemistry with Kim Woo-bin and Lee Junho contributed to the film’s success. In New Trial, he played Jo Hyun-woo, a young man falsely accused of a crime, powerfully portraying the dramatic emotions and courtroom scenes based on a true story.

In Midnight Runners, he played police cadet Kang Hee-yeol, forming a comedic and action-packed duo with Park Seo-joon, and in Forgotten, he proved his talent in thrillers as the mysterious Song Jin-seok.
After completing his military service, Kang Haneul returned in 2019 with When the Camellia Blooms, playing the sincere and rustic Hwang Yong-sik. His heartfelt performance won national popularity and earned him numerous acting awards, including the Baeksang Arts Award.

Recently, in the film Streaming, he took on a completely new challenge as Woo-sang, an internet broadcaster. Woo-sang is a narcissistic, attention-seeking character whose speech and style Kang Haneul himself helped create. He carried most of the film alone, earning praise as a “one-man show,” and convincingly played an unlikeable character, breaking away from his usual wholesome image.

In the 2025 film Opposition, he played drug broker Lee Kang-soo, a complex character navigating the line between good and evil.
