Destiny Keeper Plot Summary
The sky opens, and as the evil gods (meaning bad gods) try to descend into the human world, the emperor gathers the three most powerful high monks among humans to stop them. The three envoys are all women: Choyu Wol (Cheongsan Sword Saint), Moyong Seol (Immortal Moyong), and Yoo Sujeong (Heavenly Energy Yoo Sujeong).
These three high monks set up a formation to try to block the evil gods but fail, coughing up blood. They reveal that only Buja-nim can stop them, but he has been in seclusion for over 20 years, and there is no way to find him.
Jang Pyeongan (Buja) lives in a shabby house with a small front yard where a chicken, a dog, a turtle in a small pond, and a snake hanging on a tree create a strange atmosphere. However, he sends the dog and chicken in the yard flying into the sky to repel the monsters, plucks a leaf, throws it into the sky, and blocks the torn sky.
Chohyeonpung (disciple of Sword Saint Choyu Wol) senses a legendary animal that was active in the sky returning home while traveling with his subordinates and follows it to Jang Pyeongan’s house. Chohyeonpung immediately recognizes the true forms of the animals in Jang Pyeongan’s front yard.
The snake hanging on the tree is the Azure Dragon, the white dog is the White Tiger, the rooster is the Vermilion Bird, and the turtle is the Black Tortoise. The leaf that blocked the torn sky is actually a thousand-year-old spirit herb, and Chohyeonpung also senses tremendous energy from Jang Pyeongan standing in the yard.
The withered fruit Jang Pyeongan hands over is the thousand-year spirit fruit. He gives an invitation to a banquet, saying that warriors are heading to Gyeongseong according to the Gyeongseong intelligence report. Jang Beom (Jang Pyeongan’s son), who passed the civil and military examination, enters his father’s house and respectfully greets Chohyeonpung.
(Jang Beom is a 7th-grade warrior, and Chohyeonpung is a 9th-grade warrior, a higher rank.)
Jang Beom is embarrassed by Jang Pyeongan’s disdainful attitude toward Chohyeonpung and scolds his father to be polite, which embarrasses Chohyeonpung. After Chohyeonpung leaves the house, Jang Beom tries to forcibly take his father, who lives in the countryside, to Gyeongseong.
They learn that the Bi-yeon Jeonseo is flying from the sky and that the Gae Chun-yeon is about to open, so they must quickly return to Gyeongseong. Jang Beom orders his subordinates to bring his father, but the peerless master Jang Pyeongan easily avoids the situation and decides to go to Gyeongseong himself.
However, he is refused entry from the entrance of Gyeongseong because of his ragged appearance. Jang Pyeongan tells the guards that his son is a 5th-grade official, but they do not believe him. Reluctantly, Jang Pyeongan shows the official document he received from the emperor 20 years ago.
The document states that the holder can enter Gyeongseong unconditionally, command the city guards and money, and that members of the Great River royal family must comply unconditionally. – Valid for 20 years. Sealed with the royal jade seal –
They arrive at the Sakyemyeongwon where the Gae Chun-yeon is held, but Jang Pyeongan is still treated like a beggar. Lee Soyu (7th-grade warrior) appears and ignores the beggar-like Jang Pyeongan. Even Jang Beom’s friends laugh at Jang Pyeongan, but the host of the Gae Chun-yeon, Elder Joo Chujik (9th-grade warrior), sees the invitation and takes him into the banquet hall.
A beautiful woman, Cheongwoo (disciple of Yoo Sujeong, 8th-grade warrior), appears, and Jang Pyeongan dismisses her as Yoo Sujeong’s maid. However, Cheongwoo recognizes Jang Pyeongan and greets him politely. Since Jang Beom has feelings for Cheongwoo, Jang Pyeongan introduces her to Jang Beom.
Soyeon is surprised and asks Jang Pyeongan how he knows Cheongwoo…
At this moment, one of Elder Joo’s subordinates tears up the invitation Jang Pyeongan gave, claiming it is fake. Jang Pyeongan, who has been enduring the beggar treatment, becomes angry and releases his energy. The three envoys and Chohyeonpung feel Jang Pyeongan’s energy from afar and hurry to find him.
Cheongwoo immediately stops Elder Joo’s subordinate’s rudeness, and Elder Joo apologizes to Cheongwoo. Although Elder Joo is a 9th-grade warrior, he respects Cheongwoo as a disciple of Yoo Sujeong, even though she is a lower 8th-grade warrior. The highlight of the banquet is an auction, held to help the country with the proceeds.
Elder Joo offers a pair of white jade phoenixes, starting at 300,000 gold, Soyeon offers a Dongju, starting at 100,000 gold, Lee Soyu offers a pair of white jade ornaments, starting at 100,000 gold, and Jang Beom offers Jang Taek’s portrait of Buja. However, it is revealed that the portrait Jang Beom offered is a fake, also owned by Elder Joo, causing an awkward situation.
When his son is in trouble, Jang Pyeongan offers to submit a treasure instead, drawing a portrait of Buja himself. The auction starts at a mere half a coin. Elder Joo offers to buy it for only ten gold, and Jang Pyeongan, feeling insulted, scolds his son Jang Beom.
At that moment, Chohyeonpung arrives, shouting a million gold! ten million gold! He looks at Jang Pyeongan sitting far behind Elder Joo and greets him politely. However, Elder Joo mistakenly thinks Chohyeonpung is showing respect to him.
Jang Pyeongan takes Chohyeonpung to the backyard to talk, and the ornament on his waist cracks, and the sky darkens. Lee Soyu becomes possessed by a monster, but no one knows this yet, and Chohyeonpung returns.
Jang Pyeongan leaves the place.
When Chohyeonpung returns, Lee Soyu, possessed by the evil god, starts causing chaos. Unable to control her, everyone sits down to calm their breathing. Lee Soyu, sitting and calming her breath, suddenly holds a knife to Chohyeonpung’s neck, but at that moment, Jang Pyeongan appears and subdues the possessed Lee Soyu with one hand.
Lee Soyu seems to faint briefly but suddenly wakes up and tries to self-destruct, but Moyong Seol appears and suppresses her with magic. After a while, a giant hand of the evil god emerges from the torn sky. Jang Pyeongan tries to suppress it, but Choyu Wol appears first and temporarily counters the giant hand in the sky.
When the sky opened, just sensing the energy caused Elder Joo internal injuries, and the 7th-grade and lower warriors each made excuses and fled, leaving only Elder Joo, Jang Pyeongan, and Jang Beom. Jang Beom kneels and apologizes to his father, saying he will leave to save the country.
Jang Beom leaves without recognizing Buja Jang Pyeongan…
At this moment, the three envoys appear, bow respectfully to Jang Pyeongan, and kneel, asking Buja to help. Jang Pyeongan and the three envoys set out for the imperial city. Meanwhile, Soyeon, a friend of Jang Beom, witnesses a stranger attacking a young girl while walking. Due to the torn sky, the girl is infected by evil energy, and her wife and son are already dead. Soyeon saves the girl, but the father commits suicide out of guilt.
Seeing this, Soyeon vows to fight against the evil gods…
Since there are not many people gathered in the imperial city, Chohyeonpung is disappointed, but Jang Beom appears, saying, “I, 7th-grade warrior Jang Beom, will risk my life to obey the order.” Then several warriors, including 7th-grade warrior Soyeon, 6th-grade warriors Lee Chan and Jo Tak, 5th-grade warrior Jang Yeon, and 7th-grade warrior Oh Kyung, appear, all willing to risk their lives.
The emperor and Jang Pyeongan talk under the eaves. The emperor worries about Jang Pyeongan, not knowing he is Buja. While trying to select a leader to lead the warriors, Jang Beom recommends Elder Joo, but Elder Joo declines, saying he is too old, and instead recommends Jang Beom, who unexpectedly becomes the leader.
Jang Beom shows leadership and leads the warriors. After a few days, Jang Beom and the warriors defeat monsters afflicted by evil energy but gradually grow tired of the endless battles. Jang Beom and Soyeon sit down and talk, saying that although the remnants of the evil god’s cult have been dealt with, the ritual has begun and the evil god will descend tomorrow.
Jang Beom returns to his room and writes a letter to his father, leaving a will-like message that he will protect the world until the last moment since Buja did not appear.
While the three stars gather to perform the ritual, Moyong Seol predicts the evil god’s appearance at the crack of dawn, but Jang Pyeongan dismisses it as a lie. Seeing this, Jang Beom is embarrassed and apologizes. Suddenly, the evil god kidnaps the three stars.
Jang Pyeongan says it is time and steps forward, but Jang Beom still does not understand the situation…
The warriors say that each rank increase costs the people a huge amount of tax and say today they will risk their lives for justice and the people. They draw their swords and prepare to move, but Jang Pyeongan tells them to stop, and everyone halts.
Finally, Jang Pyeongan manifests as Buja, takes his son’s sword, and steps forward to duel the evil god. After a brief exchange of words, the duel begins.
Sword Wind Storm! Unfilial Heaven and Earth!
Jang Pyeongan enters the torn gap, and soon the gap in the sky closes. The kidnapped three stars reappear, coughing up blood. People believe Jang Pyeongan sacrificed himself to stop the evil god and kneel, clasping their hands, chanting “Buja Cheongo.”
Destiny Keeper Ending
Cheongwoo worries that Jang Beom might be discouraged but says there are still remnants to fight. The three stars are severely injured and cannot help, and their survival is thanks to Buja, but they are already exhausted. At that moment, Yeon Budong, the leader of the evil god cult, appears in the sky with his followers.
Although they failed to summon the evil god, they rejoice in having eliminated Buja and severely injured the three stars. While Jang Beom helps Soyeon, who is possessed by evil energy, the other warriors sit cross-legged and begin breathing exercises. Yeon Budong descends to the ground and threatens the warriors with heavenly punishment, targeting Jang Beom first.
“Buja saved me, so I will save you once. Kill those three. Then I will save you and everyone here. The world will be ours. Choose to be my master or die.”
Jang Beom does not answer and begins praying in a lotus position. Suddenly, the sky splits again, and everyone worries it means the evil god is descending again, but only Yeon Budong is happy.
At that moment, a giant winged creature emerges from the hole in the sky and disappears somewhere, followed by Buja Jang Pyeongan slowly descending from the sky to the ground. He tells the warriors he will end everything and ascends back to the sky to fight the evil god in a final battle.
In the end, Buja’s strike turns the evil god to dust, and when he returns to the ground, Yeon Budong refuses to accept reality. Having seen the future where he kills Yeon Budong, he refused but after going to the sky, he was reborn in the realm of spiritual emptiness and enlightenment and recited a spell, causing Yeon Budong to vanish like dust.
Jang Pyeongan calls Jang Beom, returns the sword, and tells the other warriors to go home. But Jang Beom says he will stay to help the people suffering from evil energy. Jang Pyeongan offers to pass on all his secret techniques, but Jang Beom declines, saying his father’s way is not his own.
Although Jang Beom’s progress in martial arts is slow, he is determined to open a peaceful world in his own way. Jang Pyeongan encourages him to get along well with Cheongwoo, and at that moment, Cheongwoo appears before Jang Beom.
20 years later…
Jang Pyeongan appears before the retired emperor playing Go alone and plays with him. The white-haired old man says he must go save the world again, and when Jang Pyeongan teleports to his home, the retired emperor follows, telling him to pay the money he owes. Jang Pyeongan takes a snack from a passing child and gives it to the retired emperor, giving the child a silver coin to calm his tears.
While talking with the retired emperor at Jang Pyeongan’s countryside home, Ohhae (Governor Donghyun) suddenly arrives. Claiming to revive the local economy by buying worthless land with cash, he tries to buy a 6,000 nyang land for only 1,500 nyang, attempting a scam.
At that moment, Jang Beom, now the highest authority as prime minister, appears and Ohhae is taken away. Jang Pyeongan tells his son that he should have died 20 years ago but stayed because he was worried and now plans to leave the world. He then leaves, walking toward the camera filming him.
(The world Jang Pyeongan talks about means returning to the real world from the drama.)
