Legend of The Female General plot summary

Chapter 1: A Life Behind a Mask and Betrayal

Since childhood, Hua An has lived disguised as a man under the alias “Hua Yebi,” rising from an obscure soldier to the legendary “Feihong General.” However, the world remains unaware of her true identity.

In the 20th year of the Dawei Jingyuan era, during a war against the Wutu, the Fuyue Army, led by Hua An, suffers a setback due to delayed support from General Su Zhongwu’s army, resulting in Su Zhongwu’s death. Su Zhongwu’s son, Chu Ge, fiercely resents Hua Yebi for this. After the war, Hua An is compelled by her father to return to her female identity and hand over her position to her elder brother, the real Hua Yebi. Meanwhile, the court holds the Su family accountable for the defeat, stripping them of their power. At a hearing where Chu Ge pleads for his father’s vindication, the impostor Hua Yebi, claiming to be the Feihong General, makes statements that confirm Su Zhongwu’s guilt.

Enraged, Chu Ge unmasks the impostor, revealing the real Hua Yebi. Hua An, already drugged and imprisoned due to her family’s conspiracy, is powerless to act. Ultimately, Chu Ge is punished and sets out to fight the Wutu without imperial permission. Meanwhile, Hua An, blinded and exiled to Yuhua Temple, survives an assassination attempt by her brother and falls off a cliff. Rescued by her mentor, Yu Bumang, she regains her sight and resolves to start a new life. Disguised as a man, she heads to Chu Ge’s recruitment camp.

Chapter 2: Entering the Military Camp

With her mentor’s assistance, Hua An assumes a male identity to pass the military recruitment examination. During a physical inspection that risks exposing her gender, an incident occurs involving a startled horse belonging to the physician Zheng Yiso. Hua An’s exceptional horse-taming skills save Zheng, earning her an exemption from the inspection. Observing this, Chu Ge notices that her horse-handling techniques resemble those of the Fuyue Army, his sworn enemy, and harbors deep suspicion.

Hua An, sensing Chu Ge’s doubts, suspects he may be trying to undermine her. As camp life begins, she meets distinctive fellow recruits such as Wang Pai and Gang Jiao. Chu Ge subjects the recruits to harsh training, but Hua An’s physical strength is significantly weakened due to past injuries and the lingering effects of poison. Chu Ge orders an investigation into her identity.

Chapter 3: Trials and Challenges

Struggling in training, Hua An pleads with Chu Ge to become her mentor. He agrees to teach her if she can withstand ten of his attacks, which she barely accomplishes. Chu Ge teaches her only the basics of spear techniques and ceases further instruction. Meanwhile, he spreads rumors about recruiting for the elite “Gujiying” unit to lure out spies within the camp.

Hua An discerns the trap and resolves to join Gujiying to prove her abilities. Amidst surrounding mockery, she commits to a duel with Wang Pai and Gang Jiao, training tirelessly day and night. On the day of the duel, Hua An’s exceptional skills defeat both opponents, earning her the title of “leader.” It becomes known that an unknown figure had bet on her victory, intensifying Chu Ge’s suspicions and vigilance toward her.

Chapter 4: Crisis and Rescue

On the eve of the Qixi Festival, before a flag-capture training exercise, Wang Pai and Zheng Xian break rules and climb a mountain, where they are attacked by wolves. Hua An saves Wang Pai but falls into a deep ravine while fighting the wolves. Betrayed by Zheng Xian, her rescue is delayed, but Chu Ge personally intervenes to save her. While carrying her on his back as she sleeps, Chu Ge realizes she is a woman, causing him great shock. Zheng Xian is severely punished for violating military rules. Hua An begins to notice Chu Ge treating her differently, such as providing her with special medicine.

Chapter 5: Flag-Capture Battle

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the flag-capture battle commences. Hua An’s outstanding tactics and leadership lead her team to a decisive first-place victory. Everyone expects her to be selected for Gujiying, but Chu Ge, citing “overall ability,” chooses the second-place Leihu instead, causing an uproar in the camp. Devastated and betrayed, Hua An, in a drunken state, confronts Chu Ge in his tent. Chu Ge reveals his complex intentions of testing her loyalty while remaining cautious of her.

Chapter 6: Dispatch to Hezhoucheng

At Zheng Yiso’s request to avoid an arranged marriage, Chu Ge assigns Hua An to disguise herself and accompany him to a banquet hosted by Hezhoucheng’s magistrate, Sun Shangfu. Upon arriving, Hua An encounters Zheng Yi, a former vassal of the Hua family who attempted to assassinate her, igniting her desire for revenge. While pursuing him, she faces danger but is saved by Chu Ge and Chu Suo, a military inspector, further complicating their relationships.

Chapter 7: Sword Dance at Wanhuage

Tracking Zheng Yi to the courtesan house Wanhuage, Hua An disguises herself as a dancer to evade Chu Ge. On stage, she unexpectedly encounters Chu Ge and Chu Suo. During her sword dance, Chu Suo recognizes her as the “Shinshanja” from the palace and realizes she is a woman. Meanwhile, Hua An saves Song Daodao, the daughter of Song Suzuo, a physician to whom she was betrothed, from being abducted by Sun Ling, Sun Shangfu’s son.

Chapter 8: Assassination and Disguise

At the Sun family’s banquet, Zheng Yi attempts to assassinate Chu Ge. Hua An intervenes, saving him, but temporarily loses her sight in the process. Chu Ge cares for her out of guilt and duty. Although Hua An regains her sight with Yu Bumang’s medicine, she decides to feign blindness to conceal her identity from Chu Ge. Meanwhile, Chu Ge and Bi Nuo secretly investigate the Sun family’s corruption by searching Sun Ling’s quarters.

Chapter 9: Revenge and Truth

While pretending to be blind and gathering information, Hua An uncovers Zheng Yi’s plot to harm Chu Ge. After thwarting his scheme, she seizes the opportunity for revenge, luring Zheng Yi into a duel and defeating him. Chu Ge, witnessing the entire event, directly questions her identity, but Hua An deflects with a prepared false backstory. Meanwhile, while disposing of Zheng Yi’s body, Bi Nuo discovers the corpses of missing women in the Sun family’s shrine, revealing the horrific truth behind the disappearances in Hezhoucheng.

Chapter 10: Fall of the Sun Family and Revelations

Outraged by the Sun family’s crimes of murdering women, Hua An clashes with Chu Ge’s cautious approach. At the banquet, Chu Ge pressures Sun Shangfu to disclose tax ledgers and reveals the victims’ bodies buried in the shrine, inciting the fury of the local elite. Song Daodao’s testimony and evidence from a shrine craftsman expose the crimes of Sun Shangfu and his son, but Sun Shangfu is assassinated before he can confess. Chu Ge suspects Chu Suo’s involvement.

The people, grateful for Chu Ge’s just actions, offer to fund the military. Hua An partially reveals her female identity to Chu Suo, who promises to keep her secret. The group returns to Hezhuwei, where the lighthearted bickering between Song Daodao and Zheng Yiso brings laughter back to the camp.

Chapter 11: Hua An’s Schemes and Camp Life

Hua An deduces that her brother’s motive to eliminate Chu Ge stems from the Mingshui battle and fear of her true identity being exposed. Chu Ge, convinced that Hua An is not in league with her brother, still monitors her cautiously. When Hua An avoids communal bathing with the men, Chu Ge intervenes, citing her “weakness” as an excuse, leading to rumors about her frailty.

As compensation for her “tarnished honor,” Hua An becomes Chu Ge’s personal guard, allowing her to stay close to him. Meanwhile, Chu Suo discovers evidence in ledgers of military supply embezzlement by Xi Jingbo. Chu Ge prepares to confront a Wutu invasion in Yuldae County but leaves Hua An behind due to her injuries. While gathering herbs, Song Daodao discovers and rescues an injured man, Hu Yuanzhong.

Chapter 12: Internal Enemies and Wutu Attack

Hua An suspects Hu Yuanzhong is a Wutu spy and monitors him for evidence. A masked figure, Leihu, kills an officer, Ma Daemae, and frames Hua An, leading to her imprisonment. With Song Daodao’s help, Hua An prepares a sedative and a note to warn Officer Shim, enabling preparations for a Wutu attack.

When the Wutu forces attack Hezhuwei, Leihu is revealed as a traitor. Hua An escapes from prison and joins the fight. In a one-on-one duel with the Wutu general Yildalmokja, she struggles but sustains a severe shoulder injury while saving Song Daodao. Chu Ge arrives in time to repel the enemy. While treating her wounds, Zheng Yiso discovers Hua An’s female identity and is shocked.

Chapter 13: Leihu’s Confession and Past Wounds

Chu Ge stays by Hua An’s side as she recovers. Through Leihu’s interrogation, it is revealed that he infiltrated Hezhuwei with Hu Yuanzhong, driven by vengeance after losing his family in a flood. Chu Ge releases Leihu and his brother. He confides in Hua An about his guilt and pain from the palace flood incident. Hua An comforts him. Deciphering a Wutu message with ginger tea, they uncover the name “Chamak,” leading Chu Ge to suspect Cai Anxi, a former ally of his father.

Chapter 14: Cai Anxi’s Revenge and Preparations for Jieyang

Through a conversation between Chu Suo and Cai Anxi, it is revealed that Cai Anxi seeks revenge against Su Zhongwu, believing he caused her son’s death. Chu Suo manipulates her. Hua An gifts Chu Ge a zither as an apology for previously breaking one. Chu Suo arrives in Hezhuwei to commend Chu Ge, and Hua An inquires about the Feihong General (her brother), suspecting Chu Suo’s loyalty is a facade.

During a drinking session, Hua An, intoxicated, mistakenly calls Chu Ge “father.” Prompted by Zheng Yiso’s jest, she takes Chu Ge’s jade pendant, a cherished heirloom meant for a lover. Chu Suo departs for Jieyang to pursue Cai Anxi, and Chu Ge follows. Zheng Yiso urges Chu Ge to comfort Hua An, but Chu Ge, jealous, believes she prefers Chu Suo.

Chapter 15: Past Connections and Role-Playing

On her mother’s birthday, Hua An is melancholic. Chu Ge comforts her with a pastry, which she recognizes as the same one she received as a girl at Yuhua Temple, confirming a past connection. To infiltrate Jieyang, Chu Ge plans to pose as Zhao Huancheng and his wife, Wen Yulian, with Hua An taking the latter role.

Chu Ge teaches Hua An feminine arts, such as playing the zither, bringing them closer. Song Daodao, while checking Hua An’s pulse, discovers her female identity and feels betrayed but reconciles after Hua An’s sincere apology. The group heads to Jieyang, where Chu Suo, already there, is restricted by Chu Ge’s surveillance.

Chapter 16: Maintaining Disguises in Jieyang and the Shadow of the Wutu

Chu Ge and Hua An settle at Cui Yuezhi’s residence, facing challenges and attention from noblewoman An Sojeo, which they overcome with Chu Ge’s firm attitude and extravagant spending (a hundred nyang on clothing). At a banquet, when An Sojeo provokes Hua An to play the zither, Chu Ge steps in, claiming she promised to play only for him, and performs in her stead to defuse the situation.

During the Spring Festival, Hua An fabricates a whimsical love story about Chu Ge, which he playfully interrupts, continuing their role-playing. Bi Nuo tracks Cai Anxi, who fakes her death in a fire at Chuimigak. Chu Suo is attacked by Wutu assassins but is spared upon showing a Seo family token. He suspects Xi Jingbo’s connection to the Wutu.

Chapter 17: Water Festival and Emotional Confessions

At the Water Festival, Chu Ge fulfills Hua An’s request by picking a flower from “Chaechun” to grant her wish (a jade hairpin). They stroll like ordinary lovers, buying masks and crossing a lovers’ bridge, growing closer. On a swaying boat, Chu Ge impulsively kisses Hua An’s forehead.

Playing a jester, Hua An performs a skit hinting at ten secrets about Chu Ge, including her past as a female general. Chu Ge remembers her birthday and treats her specially. Hua An expresses her heartfelt desire to be loved for her true name. Chu Ge solemnly promises to remember it.

Chapter 18: Yu Bumang and Mo Hongjin’s Past

Chu Ge and Hua An grow closer while spending a night on a boat. While tracking suspected Wutu agents, Hua An’s mentor, Yu Bumang, appears and rescues a girl, the daughter of Monggeuk’s princess Mo Hongjin, from Wutu kidnappers. When the girl is poisoned, Yu Bumang prepares an antidote. The girl’s words hint at a deep past between Yu Bumang and Mo Hongjin.

Chu Ge’s group safely returns the girl to Mo Hongjin. Despite Chu Suo’s warnings about Wutu spies, Mo Hongjin is reluctant to accept outsider interference but allows them to stay at the palace. Hua An follows the sound of Mo Hongjin’s zither and converses with her. Mo Hongjin reveals her past love and resentment toward Yu Bumang.

Chapter 19: Jieyang’s Crisis and Battle Preparations

Cui Yuezhi overlooks Chu Ge and Hua An’s false identities. Wutu spies escalate their activities, setting fire to a granary. Mo Hongjin declares war against the Wutu, assigning Chu Ge command and Hua An the role of vanguard general. Facing doubts about her abilities due to her gender, Hua An subdues skeptical Jieyang soldiers, earning their trust.

While evacuating civilians, Chu Suo is caught in a fire but is rescued by Hua An, revealing his pyrophobia. The night before the battle, Mo Hongjin and Yu Bumang reconcile, but Yu Bumang is poisoned and dies fighting Wutu spies. Seeing him clutch a silver bracelet given by Mo Hongjin, she realizes his love but regrets it is too late.

Hua An is deeply saddened by her mentor’s death.

Chapter 20: Battle of Jieyang and Yu Bumang’s Death

The Wutu launch a fierce assault on Jieyang. The city’s soldiers and civilians unite to resist. Yu Bumang sacrifices himself defending a stronghold against numerous spies, succumbing to poison. Chu Ge’s brilliant command throws the Wutu into disarray. Disguised as Mo Hongjin, Hua An lures and defeats the Wutu general Holateuk by the water but nearly drowns, only to be saved by Chu Ge.

Jieyang’s army emerges victorious but at the great cost of Yu Bumang’s death. Mo Hongjin advises Hua An not to lose Chu Ge, her cherished person. Bi Nuo tracks Cai Anxi, while Zheng Yiso treats her in the palace. Chu Suo and Chu Ge plan to interrogate Cai Anxi, but Chu Ge strengthens her security.

Chapter 21

Hua An earns heroic status among Jieyang’s noblewomen for her battlefield achievements. However, her clumsy embroidery elicits laughter. Min Ah teaches her to cook, and Chu Ge eats her overly salty noodles with a smile, preserving her confidence. When Hua An tries to mend Chu Ge’s clothing but finds no tears, he secretly rips his sleeve and asks her to sew it.

Bi Nuo stumbles in, shocked, and reports Cai Anxi’s awakening. Chu Ge coldly interrogates Cai Anxi, who admits to seeking revenge against Su Zhongwu, claiming the Mingshui battle’s defeat was unexpected. Hua An, suspecting her brother’s collusion with Xi Jingbo, harbors curiosity and unease. Chu Suo promises to keep Hua An’s female identity secret. Chu Suo, Chu Ge, and Hua An, despite bickering, see each other off as they head to Jieyang.

Chapter 22

On a boat, Yang Mingzhi laments being seen as a traitor, sharing past pains. Hua Yuxian plays the zither, recalling her history, and Hua An and Chu Ge listen attentively. Hua Yuxian implies a divorce involving Yang Mingzhi. Drunk, Hua An nearly reveals her identity to Chu Ge, and Hua Yuxian casually mentions that Hua Yebi is a woman. Suspecting Hua An’s true identity, Chu Ge agrees to meet by the lake to share secrets. Hua An confesses her real name and her journey of defying fate to grow in the military camp.

Chapter 23

Chu Ge passes by Hua An, seemingly ignoring her, but inwardly thinks of her. Chu Suo goes to Yaogyeong to investigate Hua Yebi’s past, while Hua An asks Gang Jiao to check Yuhua Temple’s visitor records. Suspecting her brother’s collusion with Xi Jingbo, she trains to uncover the truth. In Yaogyeong, Hua Yebi hears of a female general in Hezhuwei and the Jieyang battle, intuiting it is Hua An.

Chu Suo gains Xi Jingbo’s trust, exploiting Chu Ge’s unauthorized absence to stir discontent in the army and plan an attack. Hua Yebi schemes to trap Chu Ge, but her relationship with Xi Jingbo is delicate. Chu Ge and Hua An face unexpected crises in Jieyang, enduring harsh training and inner conflicts.

Chapter 24

As the Wutu attack the camp, Hua An and her group respond to the crisis. Hua Yebi tries to defend Yundo but faces multiple threats. Hua An uses a decoy tactic to distract the enemy, infiltrating the Wutu camp to rescue captive women, solidifying her status as the Feihong General. With Yi Kwang’s strategic support, they defeat the enemy. Hearing that Chu Ge and Hua An are advancing to Yaogyeong, Hua Yebi, terrified, seeks Xi Jingbo’s aid.

Chapter 25

Hua An resolves to depart, leaving a note for Chu Ge. Chu Ge and the group engage in fierce combat against the Wutu in Yundo. Hua An uses decoy tactics to divert the enemy’s attention and infiltrates their camp to protect rescued women. During the battle, Chu Ge defeats Nagu, and Yundo triumphs, though at great cost. Chu Ge and Hua An strengthen their mutual trust and continue fighting.

Hua An resolves to prove she is the true Feihong General.

Chapter 26

Hua An confronts the harsh reality of rescued women being abandoned by their families for “tainting propriety,” feeling anger and sorrow. She vehemently condemns the era’s hypocritical double standards. Meanwhile, Yi Kwang orders Kira to lead the rescued women as bait to lure the enemy, a cruel command Kira reluctantly follows.

Upon hearing this, Hua An rushes to stop the plan at the moment the city gates open. Before everyone, she rebukes Yi Kwang, declaring, “A true general’s blade should only be wielded against external enemies, not the weak.” Chu Ge, arriving at that moment, fully supports her stance. Their unity boosts the morale of Mungdo’s defense forces, who use fire attacks and smoke screens in a fierce battle against the Wutu.

Hua An and Chu Ge, in perfect coordination, directly attack the Wutu’s central army, saving each other in critical moments with life-risking teamwork. In a dire situation, Chu Ge rescues Hua An, and in the joy of reunion, she embraces him emotionally. Ultimately, the Wutu leader Nagor dies, and timely reinforcements from Yeonha arrive, securing Dawei’s victory in the Mungdo battle.

After the battle, Chu Ge calls Hua An to ask about the note she left before departing. They lay bare all their misunderstandings and emotions, melting the ice in their relationship. Chu Ge vows to trust and stand by her no matter what. Hua An resolves to return to the capital to expose the impostor Hua Yebi and restore her honor as the true Feihong General.

Chapter 27

The victory in Mungdo and the presence of a masked general naturally threaten the impostor Hua Yebi and his patron, Xi Jingbo. Hua An is convinced that evidence of their collusion is hidden in the capital and urgently presses to return to uncover the truth. Chu Ge declares without hesitation that he will accompany her, promising to stand by her side.

Meanwhile, Chu Suo, observing Hua An’s exploits in Mungdo, grows increasingly suspicious that she is the true Feihong General. Taking responsibility for defying his mentor Xi Jingbo by coming to Mungdo, he returns to the capital first. Before leaving, he tells Hua An that while he will not abandon his mentor, he has a clear sense of right and wrong. Hua An tells Chu Ge that Chu Suo is not entirely villainous and may be a potential ally in the future.

Upon hearing of their return, the impostor Hua Yebi, gripped by fear, begs Xi Jingbo for help. Xi Jingbo, enraged to learn Hua An is alive, cannot act recklessly against Chu Suo, his only trusted ally. He conspires with Hua Yebi to thwart Chu Ge and Hua An’s return to the capital.

Finally, the outcomes for each character are depicted. Kira resolves to start a new life by opening a workshop in Mungdo with the rescued women. Yi Kwang discerns traces of the true Feihong General in Hua An. Chu Suo, recognized for his achievements, is promoted to a high-ranking military official, enabling him to formally enshrine his mother in a memorial hall.
