Legend of The Female General plot summary

Chapter 1: Life Behind the Mask and Betrayal

Since childhood, Hua Yan has lived disguised as a man under the false name “Hua Ruofei,” growing from an unknown soldier into the legendary “General Feihong.” Yet no one in the world knows her true identity…

In the 20th year of the Jingyuan era, during the war against Wutu, the Fuyue army led by her is delayed in aiding the army of General Su Zhongwu, resulting in Su Zhongwu’s death on the battlefield. His son, Su Jue, resents Hua Ruofei bitterly for this. After the war, Hua Yan is forced by her father to return to her female identity and pass the title of General Feihong to her real elder brother, “Hua Ruofei,” for whom she has been standing in all this time. Meanwhile, the court blames Su Zhongwu for the military defeat and strips the Su family of all power. At an audience where Su Jue appeals his father’s wrongful defamation, the man claiming to be “General Feihong” (the real brother Hua Ruofei) further condemns Su Zhongwu, confirming the charges.

In rage, Su Jue slashes at his mask, only to reveal the real Hua Ruofei’s face, while Hua Yan herself has already been drugged and imprisoned by the conspiracy of her family. Ultimately, Su Jue is punished, and without imperial permission, rides out to attack Wutu himself. Meanwhile, Hua Yan, blinded, is imprisoned at Yuhua Monastery, and during her stepbrother Hua Ruofei’s assassination attempt, she falls off a cliff. She is saved by her master, Yu Bulang, recovers her sight, and decides to begin a new life. She disguises herself, and heads to the Su army’s recruitment camp, where Su Jue is gathering soldiers.

Chapter 2: Entering the Military Camp

With the help of her master, Hua Yan assumes male identity to enlist in the army. She must pass the recruitment exam, but risks her true gender being exposed during the physical examination. At that moment, an incident involving the Imperial Medical Bureau physician Zheng Yisuo causes a commotion, and Hua Yan demonstrates her exceptional horse-riding skills to save him, thus bypassing the physical check. Observing her technique, Su Jue notices the striking resemblance to the style used by his enemy, the Fuyue army, and begins to harbor deep suspicion. Hua Yan, sensing his suspicion, doubts whether he seeks to restrain her on purpose.

She begins her new life in the barracks and meets strong personalities such as Wang Pei and Jiang Qiao. Su Jue drills the new recruits harshly, but due to Hua Yan’s past injuries and the lingering effects of poison, her physical stamina falters. Su Jue secretly orders an investigation into her identity.

Chapter 3: Trials and Challenges

Struggling in training, Hua Yan begs Su Jue to be her teacher. He challenges her, saying he will teach her only if she can withstand ten of his attacks. She barely succeeds, and Su Jue reluctantly teaches her only the basics of spear work, refusing to go further. Meanwhile, Su Jue spreads rumors of recruitment into the “Guqi Ying” elite unit, hoping to draw out spies in the camp.

Hua Yan sees through this trap and makes it her goal to win entry into Guqi Ying to prove her worth. Ridiculed by others, she commits herself fully and challenges Wang Pei and Jiang Qiao. On the day, she defeats them with outstanding skill, becoming “captain.” The revelation that a mysterious gambler had bet on her success raises further suspicion in Su Jue, deepening his doubts.

Chapter 4: Crisis and Rescue

On the eve of Qixi Festival, during a flag-snatching exercise, Wang Pei and Zheng Xian break rules by climbing the mountain and are attacked by wolves. Hua Yan saves Wang Pei but falls into a deep ravine amid the attack. Betrayed by comrade Zheng Xian in a delay, her life is endangered, but Su Jue personally steps in to rescue her. Seeing Hua Yan asleep on his back, Su Jue realizes for the first time that she is a woman, shocked by the truth. Soldier Zheng Xian is strictly punished under army discipline. Hua Yan begins to sense that Su Jue treats her differently from the others, giving her special medicine and attention.

Chapter 5: The Flag Capture Battle

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the flag-snatching competition begins. Hua Yan leads her team with outstanding tactics and leadership, winning first place alone. While everyone expects her to qualify for Guqi Ying, Su Jue, citing “comprehensive ability,” makes the shocking decision to select the runner-up, Lei Hou. The unfair choice stirs the camp into turmoil. Hua Yan is deeply shaken and storms drunkenly into Su Jue’s tent to protest, leaving him conflicted between suspicion and an emerging desire to test her true nature.

Chapter 6: Mission to Hezhou City

Su Jue asks Hua Yan to disguise herself as Zheng Yisuo for a banquet hosted by Magistrate Sun Shangfu of Hezhou City. During the banquet, Hua Yan spots Zheng Yi, a former retainer of the Hua family and the assassin who once tried to kill her. Burning with vengeance, she pursues him, falling into danger until saved unexpectedly by Su Jue and Chu Zhao. Chu Zhao appears in Hezhou as a patrolling officer of the Ministry of War, further entangling the plot.

Chapter 7: Sword Dance at Wanhuage

Tracing Zheng Yi’s trail, Hua Yan enters the brothel Wanhuage. To elude Su Jue, she disguises herself as a dancer, performing on stage, only to unexpectedly meet Su Jue and Chu Zhao. During the sword dance, Chu Zhao recognizes her as the “Xinsanzi” he once met at the fortress, realizing she is female. Meanwhile, Hua Yan rescues Song Dodo from near abduction by Sun Shangfu’s son, Sun Ling, later realizing she is the daughter of physician Song Suzhuo, once betrothed to her.

Chapter 8: Assassination and Deception

At a Sun family banquet, Zheng Yi attempts to assassinate Su Jue. Hua Yan senses the danger and saves him, but temporarily loses her sight in the process. Out of guilt and responsibility, Su Jue takes gentle care of her. She recovers her vision thanks to medicine from Yu Bulang but pretends to remain blind to conceal her identity. Meanwhile, Su Jue and Bino secretly investigate the Sun family’s corruption in Sun Ling’s quarters.

Chapter 9: Revenge and Truths

While pretending to be blind, Hua Yan uncovers Zheng Yi’s plan to kill Su Jue. She sets up a trap, luring Zheng Yi and eventually killing him in battle, achieving her revenge. Su Jue, witness to it all, confronts her directly about who she really is, but she deceives him with her prepared false identity. Meanwhile, while disposing of Zheng Yi’s corpse, Bino stumbles upon the hidden corpses of missing women inside the Sun family temple, uncovering the horrific truth of the Hezhou disappearances.

Chapter 10: The Fall of the Sun Family

Hua Yan is enraged at the atrocities of the Sun family father and son. Su Jue tactically exposes their corruption at a banquet, demanding their ledgers and revealing the bodies buried in the temple, stirring outrage. With testimony from Song Dodo and evidence from a craftsman, the Suns’ crimes are publicly exposed. Just before revealing more, Sun Shangfu is assassinated. Su Jue begins suspecting Chu Zhao as the hidden hand. Thanks to his just actions, commoners support Su Jue by contributing supplies. Hua Yan reveals part of her identity to Chu Zhao, who promises to protect her secret.

Chapter 11: Hua Ruofei’s Conspiracy and Life in the Military Camp

Hua Yan analyzes that Hua Ruofei’s motive to eliminate Su Jue lies in the conspiracy of the Battle of Mingshu and the fear that her true identity will be exposed. Although Su Jue is convinced that Hua Yan is not in collusion with Hua Ruofei, he still keeps a cautious watch on her. When Hua Yan tries to avoid mingling with the men at the hot springs, Su Jue intervenes, claiming her “frailty” as the reason for blocking her, which leads to rumors spreading about her being “weak.”

Hua Yan compensates for her loss of honor by becoming Su Jue’s personal guard and staying close to him. Meanwhile, Chu Zhao discovers in the records evidence of Xu Jingbo’s embezzlement of military supplies. Su Jue receives news about Wutu’s invasion of Yudai County and prepares to march but refrains from taking Hua Yan due to her injuries. Song Dodo discovers Houwang Zhong injured while gathering herbs and rescues him.

Chapter 12: Internal Enemies and Wutu’s Assault

Hua Yan suspects Houwang Zhong, whom Song Dodo rescued, might be a Wutu spy and begins surveillance for evidence. Lei Hou appears and assassinates Maodai’s shepherd, framing Hua Yan. Sim Huan imprisons Hua Yan. With Song Dodo’s help, Hua Yan sends the “Menghan Medicine” and a note to Sim Jiaodou, warning of Wutu’s impending attack.

Wutu forces launch an assault on Yuzhou Guard, revealing Lei Hou as a traitor. Hua Yan escapes prison to join the fight. She struggles in a one-on-one duel with Wutu general Yidal Muzi, suffering a serious right shoulder injury while rescuing Song Dodo. Su Jue arrives just in time to repel the enemy. Physician Zheng Yisuo tends to Hua Yan’s wounds and is shocked to learn her female identity.

Chapter 13: Lei Hou’s Confession and Past Wounds

Su Jue nurses Hua Yan carefully. During Lei Hou’s interrogation, it is revealed that after losing his family to floodwaters, he allied with Houwang Zhong for revenge and infiltrated Yuzhou Guard. Su Jue releases Lei Hou and his brother. He confesses the pain and guilt he felt during the submerged fortress incident to Hua Yan, and she comforts him. By decoding Wutu’s secret message with ginger soup, they discover the name “Chamok.” Su Jue begins suspecting Chae Anhui, formerly his father’s chief officer.

Chapter 14: Chae Anhui’s Revenge and Preparation for Xiyang

Through conversations between Chu Zhao and Chae Anhui, it is revealed that Chae Anhui believes Su Zhongwu killed his son and seeks revenge. Chu Zhao uses him as a tool. Hua Yan gifts Su Jue a guqin and apologizes for breaking it in the past. When Chu Zhao arrives at Yuzhou Guard, he praises Su Jue. Hua Yan asks about General Feihong (Hua Ruofei), but thinks his loyalty is all an act.

During a drinking party, Hua Yan and Chu Zhao share drinks, and in a drunken moment, Hua Yan accidentally calls Su Jue “father.” Zheng Yisuo jokes, prompting Hua Yan to seize Su Jue’s jade pendant, which was a treasured keepsake from Su Jue’s mother and loved one. Chu Zhao leaves for Xiyang, with Su Jue following. Zheng Yisuo urges Su Jue to comfort Hua Yan, but Su Jue gets jealous upon hearing that Hua Yan wants to see Chu Zhao.

Chapter 15: Past Connections and Role Play

On her mother’s birthday, feeling depressed, Hua Yan is comforted by Su Jue, who hands her a guihuatang, the same as one he gave to the girl (Hua Yan) he met at Yuhua Monastery. Su Jue plans to disguise himself as Zhao Huancheng and his wife Wen Ouyen to enter Xiyang, with Hua Yan playing the role of Wen Ouyen.

Su Jue teaches Hua Yan guqin and other fine arts, bringing them closer. Song Dodo notices Hua Yan’s pulse and realizes she is female, feeling betrayed but reconciles due to her sincerity. As they head to Xiyang, Chu Zhao has already arrived but remains under Su Jue’s watchful eyes.

Chapter 16: Maintaining Identities in Xiyang and Shadows of Wutu

Su Jue and Hua Yan settle into the home of Choi Woeol-ji but face the challenges brought by An So-jeo, a noblewoman who covets their possessions and tries to provoke them through theft and challenges. Su Jue confidently handles her provocations with grand spending (white silk clothes). At a banquet, when An So-jeo pressures Hua Yan to play the guqin, Su Jue intervenes, declaring it a promise to play only for himself, averting the crisis.

At the Beginning of Spring Festival, Hua Yan fabricates a strange love story about Su Jue, but he promptly stops her, prompting her to remain in character. Bino investigates Chae Anhui’s whereabouts but reports that Chae Anhui staged his death in the Chumi Pavilion fire. Chu Zhao is attacked by Wutu assassins but scares them off by showing a Xu family token. Chu Zhao suspects Xu Jingbo’s involvement with Wutu.

Episode 17: The Festival of Letters and Confessions

At the Festival of Letters, Su Jue accepts Hua Yan’s request and picks flowers in “Chaechun” to grant her wish (Jaokpyeon). They stroll together like ordinary lovers, visit shops, and cross a lover’s bridge, growing closer. On a rocking boat, Su Jue accidentally kisses Hua Yan’s forehead.

Hua Yan plays the role of a clown, revealing ten secrets about herself (that she was the female general, that she liked the moon—possibly Su Jue—but he didn’t know). Su Jue remembers her birthday and treats her specially; Hua Yan confesses her desperate desire to be loved by her real name. Su Jue solemnly promises to remember it.

Episode 18: Yu Bulang and Mo Honggeum’s Past

Su Jue and Hua Yan spend a night on a boat growing closer (innocently asleep). Hunting for suspected Wutu agents on the street, their master Yu Bulang appears, rescuing the daughter of a Mongol princess from kidnappers. The girl is poisoned, and Yu Bulang brews an antidote. The girl’s words hint at the deep past between Yu Bulang and Princess Mo Honggeum.

Su Jue’s group safely returns the girl to Mo Honggeum. Though Mo Honggeum distrusts Chu Zhao’s warnings about Wutu agents and dislikes outsiders, she eventually allows them to stay at the royal palace. Hua Yan follows Mo Honggeum’s guqin music and converses with her, where Mo Honggeum shares her past love, separation, and resentment toward Yu Bulang.

Episode 19: Crisis at Xiyang City and Preparing for Battle

Choi Woeol-ji appears to tolerate Hua Yan and Su Jue’s impersonations. Wutu agents become active, and an arson breaks out in the granary. Mo Honggeum declares a decisive battle against the Wutu army, appointing Su Jue commander and Hua Yan vanguard general. Hua Yan gains the trust of skeptical Xiyang soldiers who doubt a female general’s abilities by directly subduing them.

During civilian evacuations, Chu Zhao is caught in flames but rescued by Hua Yan. It is revealed that Chu Zhao suffers from thalassophobia. On the eve of battle, Mo Honggeum and Yu Bulang reconcile in a final conversation, but Yu Bulang dies from poisoning during combat with Wutu agents. Mo Honggeum holds Yu Bulang’s silver bracelet until his last breath, confirming her feelings but regretting it is too late. Hua Yan is deeply saddened by her master’s death…

Episode 20: The Battle of Xiyang City and Yu Bulang’s Death

The Wutu army launches a fierce assault. The soldiers of Xiyang City unite to fight back. Yu Bulang defends the fortress, fighting many spies but succumbs to poison. Su Jue expertly commands to throw the Wutu army into chaos. Hua Yan, disguised as Mo Honggeum, lures enemy general Huo Adek to the riverbank and defeats him but falls unconscious in the water. Su Jue rescues her, giving what seems like artificial respiration or a kiss.

Despite victory, the army pays the high price of Yu Bulang’s death. Mo Honggeum advises Hua Yan not to lose someone dear (Su Jue). When she tries to mend Su Jue’s clothes but finds no damage, he discreetly tears the sleeve and asks her to sew it.

Chu Zhao promises to keep Hua Yan’s female identity a secret. The group departs for Xiyang with some quarrels but good wishes.

On the ship, Yang Mingzhi expresses his pain, considering himself a traitor. Hua Yuxian’s guqin music recalls the past, and Hua Yan and Su Jue listen closely. It is implied Hua Yuxian has experienced divorce and that Yang Mingzhi was involved. Drunk, Hua Yan nearly reveals her identity to Su Jue, who casually mentions Hua Ruofei’s femininity.
