Second Shot at Love plot summary
Episode 1
Early in the morning, automotive engineer Han Geum-joo is shocked at work by the news of her broken engagement with her fiancé, Kim Joo-yeop. Her colleagues spread rumors that the breakup was due to her drinking, and in her hometown of Bocheon, people begin to see her as an alcoholic. However, the real reason for the breakup is different: Geum-joo discovered that Kim Joo-yeop was having an affair with a coworker, who became pregnant. Conscious of her parents and the opinions of those around her, Geum-joo hides the truth and instead uses drinking as an excuse to call off the wedding. Throughout this ordeal, she suffers from resentment, anger, and loneliness.
After the breakup, Geum-joo’s mother, Kim Kwang-ok, tells the townspeople not to sell alcohol to her daughter, imposing a prohibition. Geum-joo, led by her mother, returns to her hometown. Upon arrival, she is startled to learn that Seo Eui-jun, her best friend and first love from school, is now working as a psychiatrist in the village. Eui-jun, who despises alcohol, is now the director of the local health center. Geum-joo tries to avoid running into him, but they end up meeting by chance in the market alley.
Their first encounter is awkward and tense. Eui-jun congratulates Geum-joo on her engagement, but she sharply replies that the wedding is off. Eui-jun is puzzled by rumors that Geum-joo broke off the engagement because of alcohol. Geum-joo hides her pain by saying, “I’m not getting married because I prefer alcohol.” The two continue their conversation, tangled in misunderstandings and past feelings.
Meanwhile, rumors about Geum-joo grow in the village. She gets drunk and causes a scene in the street, and the townspeople begin to avoid her. Her mother worries but is also frustrated, and Geum-joo, caught in family conflict, feels increasingly isolated. She is frustrated by her inability to reveal the truth about the breakup and tries to soothe her heart with alcohol.
Eui-jun gives a lecture on alcoholism at the village health center, emphasizing, “Alcoholism has nothing to do with social status or work ability. If you can’t control your drinking, anyone can become an addict.” This lecture resonates deeply with Geum-joo. She is confused, wondering if she truly cannot control her drinking, or if she is simply relying on alcohol to hide her pain.
At the end of the episode, Geum-joo, drunk, damages Eui-jun’s car. Eui-jun looks at her with concern he cannot hide. Geum-joo asks herself how she ended up so broken, while Eui-jun is also caught up in complicated feelings and memories about her.
Episode 2
On her grandfather’s memorial day, Geum-joo, drunk, ruins the ritual table and flees home to escape her mother’s anger. Wandering the streets at night, she is nearly hit by Eui-jun’s car, and in her drunken state, mistakes his house for her own and enters. The next morning, Geum-joo wakes up in a strange room, and Eui-jun firmly advises her to quit drinking. Geum-joo learns about Eui-jun’s past through an online community and becomes curious about why he returned to his hometown. The mysteries surrounding Eui-jun and Geum-joo’s drinking problem add tension between them.
Episode 3
Geum-joo vows to quit drinking but struggles under the gaze of the villagers and her family’s expectations. Her mother continues to ask people not to sell her alcohol, and Geum-joo feels increasingly lonely. Eui-jun suggests she attend a sobriety camp to help her quit. At first, Geum-joo resists, but she faces her condition and participates in the camp. There, she confronts her problems seriously and gradually grows closer to Eui-jun. Geum-joo runs into her ex-boyfriend, gets satisfying revenge, and decides to put the past behind her.
Episode 4
Shocked by the news of her ex-boyfriend’s marriage, Geum-joo leaves the sobriety camp and drinks again. Her resolve to “quit after just this one” repeatedly fails, and she is diagnosed with alcoholism. Drunk and having lost her memory, she confesses something to Eui-jun but cannot remember it the next day. Eui-jun worries about her inability to control her drinking and suggests they attend an alcoholism lecture together. In the rain, Eui-jun finds Geum-joo, covers her with an umbrella, and Geum-joo opens up about her true feelings.
Episode 5
Drawing on her experiences at the sobriety camp, Geum-joo tries to stay away from alcohol. However, misunderstandings from villagers, family expectations, and rumors shake her resolve. Eui-jun advises her to keep a sobriety diary, and Geum-joo records her days and reflects on herself. She joins a pottery club with friends to enjoy time without alcohol and realizes she can be happy without relying on it. Eui-jun shares his own past wounds related to his father with Geum-joo.

Second Shot at Love Ending
Episode 12
Early in the morning, Han Geum-joo prepares a small party with family, friends, and villagers to celebrate her one-year sobriety anniversary. The living room is filled with homemade non-alcoholic drinks, freshly baked bread, and fruits. Her mother, Kim Kwang-ok, is moved to tears by her daughter’s transformation, and her sister Hyeon-joo and friend Bong Seon-uk sincerely congratulate Geum-joo’s new beginning. Geum-joo displays her sobriety diary and photos at one side of the party. The diary is filled with records of 365 days without alcohol, the tough moments, and the days she overcame.
As the party begins, Geum-joo declares to the villagers, “Now, I’m happy enough without alcohol.” At first, the villagers feel awkward, but they applaud her heartfelt words. Eui-jun quietly approaches Geum-joo and whispers, “I’m really proud of how far you’ve come.” Smiling, Geum-joo replies, “Now I can finally love myself.”
Around lunchtime, Geum-joo takes a walk through the village with her family. Her mother confesses, “It used to break my heart every time you relied on alcohol. Now, I’m happy to see you living sober.” Geum-joo tightly holds her mother’s hand, saying, “I could only come this far because of you.” Her sister Hyeon-joo hugs her, saying, “Now, you’re my pride.”
In the afternoon, Geum-joo gives her first lecture as a sobriety counselor at the village health center. She honestly shares her experience, emphasizing, “It’s okay to make mistakes. What matters is having the courage to get back up.” The villagers listening to her are moved to tears by her sincerity. Eui-jun quietly watches Geum-joo from the audience, proud of her growth.
As evening falls, Geum-joo walks through the village at sunset with Eui-jun. Holding hands, they talk about the changes of the past year and their dreams for the future. Eui-jun says, “My life has changed because you’re in it,” and Geum-joo replies, “Now, I’ll live on love and trust, not alcohol.” The two share a quiet smile, gazing at each other.
In the final scene, Geum-joo sits in her front yard, turning a page in her diary. “Now, I’m happy enough even when I’m sober. Tomorrow, and the day after, I’ll live loving myself without alcohol.” She gazes quietly at the setting sun outside the window, closing her eyes.
