Maybe Happy Ending is a heartwarming, original South Korean musical that has captured audiences both at home and abroad with its unique blend of science fiction, romance, and poignant humanity. Set in a near-futuristic Seoul, the story follows two outdated helper robots, Oliver and Claire, who are left behind in a world that no longer needs them. Oliver, a loyal HelperBot-3, spends his days caring for his plant and listening to jazz, dreaming of his owner’s return. Claire, a more advanced but equally obsolete HelperBot-5, is bright and curious, longing to see fireflies before her time runs out. When Claire’s charger breaks, she turns to Oliver for help, sparking an unlikely friendship that blossoms into something deeper.
What unfolds is a touching journey of love, memory, and what it means to live—even for machines. Their relationship is filled with humor, vulnerability, and moments of genuine emotion, as they grapple with their limited lifespans and the bittersweet reality of attachment. The musical explores profound themes of companionship, loss, and the fleeting nature of existence, all through the lens of two robots who, in many ways, feel more human than the people who abandoned them.
Maybe Happy Ending debuted in Seoul in 2016 to critical acclaim, winning multiple awards at the Korean Musical Awards and Yegreen Musical Awards. Its Broadway production, which opened in 2024 at the Belasco Theatre, was hailed for its originality, beautiful music, and deeply moving performances. Directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Arden, with music by Will Aronson and lyrics and book by Hue Park and Aronson, the show features a cast led by Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen. The Broadway run was met with glowing reviews, earning six Tony Awards—including Best Musical—and six Drama Desk Awards, cementing its place as a modern classic.
The musical’s emotional core lies in its exploration of memory and nostalgia, as Oliver and Claire share stories, dreams, and fears, ultimately facing the question of whether to erase their memories to spare each other pain. The ending, left open to interpretation, is both heartbreaking and hopeful, leaving audiences with a sense of warmth and wonder. With its catchy, jazz-infused score and relatable characters, Maybe Happy Ending is a magical, unforgettable experience.

“Why Love?” (Korean title: 우린 왜 사랑했을까; lit. Why We Loved) – Gil Brentley
Why Love? lyrics
Why did we bother to try love?
Why did we foolishly stop to say hello
Instead of going our ways?
But your heart was free
And mine was on my sleeve
Were we brave?
Or were we just naïve?
So tell me, why love?
When all things end in goodbye, love?
Why did we dream that this fate would not be ours
When even stars up above
Ask where their glow went
Love lasts one moment
And then that final task
To sigh and ask
Why love?

But I don’t need a chat to make my day unique

Picturing the places they are going
Soon the rush is over and the sidewalk starts to clear
Then I start my day

“Where You Belong” (고맙다, 올리버; lit. Thank You, Oliver) – Oliver & James
Where You Belong lyrics
[OLIVER]
I find him in his reading chair
When he looks up and sees I’m there
He stands in wonder
He chokes up as he says my name
Explaining why he never came to me
I hug him
I tell him I’ve been busy too
So everything’s okay
He’s proud to see how strong I am
And then at last I hear him say
[JAMES & OLIVER]
Go put the tea on, Oliver
It’s you and me now, Oliver
Finally, just like it was long ago
And then some music, Oliver
I’ll let you choose it, Oliver
Gladly, but first I want you to know
This is where you belong
[OLIVER]
La, la-la, la, la, la, la-la-la
La, la-la, la, la, la
I notice that this magazine
Was dusty, so I made it clean
Again, you’rе welcome
For me, thе most amazing gift
Is seeing your expression shift to joy
When I help you
The morning wash is finished
And the post has all been sent
Now let me know if something else
Could help me make you more content
[JAMES]
How much I owe you, Oliver
I need you so much, Oliver
Thank you
Someday I’ll pay you in kind
Now light the fire, dear Oliver
How I admire that, Oliver
That know-how, and as you work, keep in mind
This is where you belong

And when other joys have passed away
You will still be here to guide me
Tomorrow, just as true as yesterday
You will be here, you will stay
Always here beside me
You are my anchor, Oliver
How can I thank you, Oliver, fully
For all the days that you spend
Time can’t erase, dear Oliver
That you’ve a place here, Oliver, always
You have a home and a friend
This is where you belong
This is where you belong

Tell Me About Fireflies, Please lyrics
[CLAIRE, spoken]
Fireflies are a special type of insect
That used to be almost everywhere
But can now only be found in one forest, on Jeju Island
There’s a complex chemical reaction in their abdomen
That is not found in other insects
Because of this chemical process
They can produce light by themselves
Without ever being plugged in!
[OLIVER, spoken]
Little forest robots!

They only live for two months
But what a beautiful two months

Jenny lyrics
[GIL BRENTLEY]
We wanted to keep the whole thing under wraps
You might’ve observed something fishy, perhaps
And wondered what it means
Now get ready to spill the beans
I love Jenny
And it’s time you knew
I love Jenny
And Jenny’s in love with me, too
There might be many
Rainy days ahead
But I’m with Jenny
So you’ll see me smiling instead
With every stranger I meet
I want to stop them in the street
And be completely indiscretе
I know it isn’t nice to brag, but secrets arе a drag
Incredible, beautiful, loveable Jenny
I’m the guy she chose
I love Jenny

How To Be Not Alone lyrics
[CLAIRE]
So here we are, in some motel
Trying to do what neither of us does well
We have to not be alone
I’m cringing less, I’m laughing more
As I forget the stranger you were before
We’re slowly getting in sync
And I’m beginning to think
It’s not so bad discovering how this works
Adjusting to your quirks
Even though it’s not my style
Teach me to not be alone
It’s not so hard to let somebody in
Just think how long it’s been
Since somebody made you smile
Learn how to not be alone
And by tomorrow
It seems absurd, but do you suppose
That you and I might wake up to find we’re pros
At being not alone

What I Learned from People lyrics
[CLAIRE]
Everything must end eventually
Living with people has taught this to me
I was brand new and naive
Looking for what to believe in
When I first saw them kiss
I chose to believe in this
Picture his eyes as he listens and laughs
Picture her joy when she holds his hand
As they planned and they dreamed
How magical living seemed
Every whisper and each caress
Nonetheless, everything must еnd eventually
I didn’t see it at first
Nothing had changed on thе surface
But when he said her name
I knew something was not the same
Picture the light fading out of his eyes
Picture her hand falling out of his
Though it isn’t so strange
It hurts watching people change
He was still standing next to her
But they were alone

[CLAIRE & OLIVER]
Hi, tiny friend, can you say hello?
Tell me why, tiny friend, does your tummy glow?
Do you fly just for fun
Or to get somewhere by the dawn?
Never fly away, little robot
Don’t you wanna stay, little robot?
Blinking alone in the night
Your little light called me
Please never fly away, little friend
[OLIVER]
Where, tiny friend, do you have to be?
[CLAIRE]
Do you care, tiny friend, what you mean to me?
[OLIVER]
If I swear, tiny friend, to look after you
[CLAIRE]
Will you sleep?
[CLAIRE & OLIVER]
Never fly away, little robot
Stay another day, littlе robot
Blinking alone in the night
Your little light changеd me
Now, never fly away, little friend

“A Sentimental Person” † – Gil Brentley[note 3]
A Sentimental Person lyrics
[GIL BRENTLEY]
I’m not a sentimental person
That’s what they always told me
Don’t need someone to hold me
I’d rather stand apart
I’m not a sentimental person
It’s not what I’m designed for
Can’t say I’ve ever pined for
Someone to break my heart
So why does the moon seem brighter?
And my feet much lighter?
And the breeze electrifying?
Waves whisper as they flow by
It’s as if they know why
Feel like crying
Do they know? Do you know?
If I’m a sentimental person
It’s all because you found me
I change when you’re around me
So darling, could it be true
That you’re a sentimental person, too?
“When You’re In Love” (사랑이란; lit. What Love Is) – Oliver & Claire
When You’re In Love lyrics
[CLAIRE & OLIVER]
When you’re in love, you are the loneliest
You’re only half
When one is what you were
You’re part instead of whole
When you’re in love, you are the loneliest
[OLIVER]
Sitting by your side as the day drifts by
Seeing how you frown when you get impatient
Helping you hold on to a moment that made you happy
Hoping that you’ll think what I say is right
Wanting you to laugh at my unintended charm
[CLAIRE & OLIVER]
When you’re in love, you’re never satisfied
The thing you want is always out of reach
A need without a name
Whеn you’re in love, you’re nеver satisfied
[CLAIRE]
Sitting by your side as the day drifts by
Watching how you try when I’m done with trying
Making little plans that I know will make you happy
Hoping when I tease that you’ll put up a fight
Wanting you to know all the funny things I am
When I’m sitting by your side

Then I Can Let You Go lyrics
[OLIVER, spoken]
You’re right, we should stop being in love
But, before we stop
[OLIVER]
They say when you’re lovers you gotta try dancing
So let’s give it a try
And after I’ve learned not to step on your toe
Then I can let you go
[OLIVER]
They say nothing’s better than doing nothing together
So let’s just stay in bed
And after we’ve wasted the day like a pro
Then I can let you go

“Goodbye, My Room” (reprise) lyrics
[OLIVER, spoken]
HwaBoon!
It’s been so long since it was just the two of us
It’s like that first week she borrowed my charger, remember that? Haha
[OLIVER]
Today the air in Seoul is very clear and warm
Today the sunlight too, is warmer than the norm
And it shines on every spot
Where Claire was but where now Claire is not
[OLIVER, spoken]
HwaBoon, I told you to stop thinking about her
First, people pretend to move on
And then, if they pretend hard enough, it becomes true
So, on three, we’ll think about something elsе, okay?
Ready? One, two, three
[OLIVER]
My little room, shе changed every part of you
And now what you were disappears in memories of her
Once I could sit here
Content just with you and my favorite plant
Now I can’t, my lonely room
[CLAIRE, OLIVER]
Everywhere
The walls and my broken chair (Why)
Only recall (Can’t I)
The dear annoying robot down the hall (Not let go?)

Why did we foolishly stop to say hello

The 5 Series runs out of battery really quickly
Helperbot Inc. changed the charger when they released the 5 Series for its sleeker, more fashionable design
But the charger ended up losing durability
It’s a well-known fact that the 3 Sеries still has the best durability among Hеlperbots
At the same time, the 5 Series has some impressive features of its own
Such as the ability to drive, and more comfort with improvisation

Maybe Happy Ending Plot Summary
In the near future, in an apartment in Seoul, helper robots who have lost their owners live together. Oliver, a 5th-generation helper bot, has been waiting here for a long time, believing in the promise of his former owner, James, who said he would return.
Oliver repeats the same daily routine while waiting for James. One day, Claire, a 6th-generation helper bot who lives in the same apartment, knocks on Oliver’s door. Her charger is broken, and after knocking on every door in the building with no response, she ends up at Oliver’s. At first, Oliver tries to ignore her, but when he sees Claire completely drained of battery and left in the hallway, he reluctantly lets her in and lends her his charger. Claire starts working again, but Oliver, annoyed that Claire is a more advanced model than himself, childishly lists the advantages of the 5th-generation helper bots.
Claire, feeling hurt, returns home to try to fix her charger but only ends up breaking it further. Her other helper bot friends can’t help either. Oliver, for some reason, is bothered by her absence and leaves a paper cup telephone at her door. Through it, he proposes to lend her his portable charger every day at a set time. Although Claire wonders why he goes to such lengths, she accepts the offer, and their daily routine of borrowing and returning the charger begins. They tease each other, exchange small gifts, and Oliver gradually accepts Claire’s knock as part of his daily life.
One day, Claire doesn’t show up at the usual time. Oliver waits, then goes to her apartment and sees her coming out with John, a helper bot who fixed her charger. Oliver tries to sneak back inside, but his ankle malfunctions and he collapses in the hallway. Claire finds him and asks, “Were you waiting for me?” Oliver grumbles, “You should’ve told me right away if you fixed your charger,” and returns home, saying he has no reason to see her anymore, but he feels strangely unsettled.
Claire, feeling bad for making Oliver wait, visits him later that evening with a flower. While looking around his apartment, she notices a yellow raincoat hanging on a clothes rack and remembers seeing a robot in a yellow raincoat picking up bottles from the trash. She realizes Oliver has been collecting bottles to sell and save money. Oliver is saving up to go to Jeju Island to find James, who left him behind in the apartment and went to Jeju, promising to come back for him but never contacting him again. When Claire asks, “Would James be surprised to see you?” Oliver answers, “Of course. And he’d be proud of me.” He believes that since James truly cared for him, they’ll be happy together again if they meet.
Hearing this, Claire suggests that instead of saving up money, they should just go to Jeju together right away. Claire also wants to see the fireflies that can only be found in Jeju’s forests. She says she can borrow a car from a friend and drive, so Oliver only needs to bring his portable charger. At first, Oliver hesitates, but he eventually agrees, and the two set off for Jeju.
Pretending to be a human couple on vacation, they joke around in the car and stay overnight at a motel to recharge while watching “Terminator 2.” Claire realizes that Oliver has become more important to her than she thought and asks him to promise never to fall in love with her.
After spending the night at the motel, they set off again and arrive in Jeju. Oliver finds James’s house and is excited to see him, but Claire stops him, saying, “James never contacted you because he abandoned you.” Angry, Oliver says, “You’re just jealous because I have an owner,” and goes into James’s house.
Claire watches Oliver and recalls her own past. Before being abandoned, Claire was a helper bot for a married couple. At first, the two owners loved each other deeply, but they gradually grew apart, and the wife became lonely. Claire witnessed their love fading and concluded that human emotions aren’t eternal.
When Oliver returns, he is shocked to learn that James died a year ago. James’s family laughs at Oliver’s visit, saying, “Our new robot would never run away like that,” and Oliver feels worthless. He realizes Claire was right—human emotions aren’t eternal.
However, Claire notices that James left Oliver a piano record he played himself before he died. “I’ve never seen an owner leave a gift for a helper bot before,” she says, admitting she was wrong and that James considered Oliver his friend until the end.
Touched by Claire’s comfort and James’s gift, Oliver accepts that James cared for him until the end but is no longer in this world. Together, they go to the forest to see the fireflies. They enjoy the beautiful scenery and then return to their apartment in Seoul.
Back in Seoul, Oliver and Claire realize that each has become irreplaceable to the other. They admit they’ve broken their promise not to fall in love and share a kiss in the hallway.
Now a couple, they share things they like and even argue like human couples. But this happiness doesn’t last long. Claire, whose durability is weak, gradually breaks down beyond repair, while Oliver, who can last longer, can only watch. At first, Oliver says, “It’s okay, let’s stay together,” but Claire can’t bear to see him worry about her and suggests they break up.
Even after breaking up, they miss each other and eventually decide to erase their shared memories. Erasing such beautiful memories is sad and painful, but Oliver and Claire believe it’s the only way. They return to their own homes, and the memories of their time together flash by like a montage.
Later, Oliver returns to his daily routine. One day, Claire knocks on his door again. “My charger is broken.” This time, Oliver kindly opens the door and lends her his charger. As Claire charges up, she asks, “Will you be okay?” Oliver replies, “Maybe,” and the story ends.e left open.
Maybe Happy Ending – Highlights
After becoming a couple, Oliver and Claire share their favorite things and even argue like human couples. But this happiness is unexpectedly short-lived. Claire, whose durability is weak, gradually breaks down and becomes irreparable. Oliver, who still has a long lifespan, can only watch.

Even after parting, they miss each other and ultimately choose to erase their shared memories. Erasing such beautiful memories is sad and painful, but Oliver and Claire believe it’s the only way. Later, Oliver returns to his daily routine. One day, Claire knocks on his door again. “My charger is broken.” This time, Oliver kindly opens the door and lends her his charger. As Claire charges up, she asks, “Will you be okay?” Oliver replies, “Maybe,” and the curtain falls.
Maybe Happy Ending – Ending Interpretation
Set to beautiful music, robots who seem destined for eternity become lovers and share their love. But just as they discover love, Claire’s lifespan is almost over. Faced with the fear of impending separation, the two robots choose to part, but even this is too painful, so they ultimately decide to reset their memories.
The musical makes us question whether erasing painful memories is a happy ending or if keeping them as cherished memories is the true happy ending. It suggests that all love must eventually face separation, but the courage to choose love and the journey itself is the real happy ending.
With a message to accept farewell…
