Resident Playbook Cast

Just as we were excited to hear that the third installment of the Wise Hospital Life series was being produced, a medical crisis broke out in South Korea, and so the drama, Wise Hospital Life, was finally released after a full year of waiting. The hottest actresses, Go Yoon-jung (as Oh Yi-young), Cynthia (as Pyo Nam-kyung), Kang Yoo-seok (as Eom Jae-il), Han Ye-ji (as Kim Sa-bi), and Jung Joon-won (as Koo Do-won), portrayed the ups and downs of first-year residents in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Jongno Yulje Hospital.

Someday, Wise Resident Life was directed by Kim Song-hee, a former assistant writer for Wise Hospital Life, and directed by Lee Min-soo. The reason why he chose the obstetrics and gynecology department among the many hospitals is because he thought it was the best fit for dealing with the growth period of young adults and the stories of patients.

Resident Playbook Plot

Resident Playbook Jongno Yulje Hospital filming location is Yongin Severance Hospital. It is said that they filmed on weekends and holidays to avoid patients. For reference, the original Hospital Playlist Location is Ewha Womans University College of Medicine Seoul Hospital.

Oh I-young (Go Youn-jung) wakes up from a nightmare and struggles with debt and unemployment in reality. Persuaded by her older sister, she returns as a first-year OB-GYN resident at Jongno Yulje Hospital. From her very first day, she faces emergency situations and grows together with fellow residents like Kim Sa-bi and Um Jae-il. She refuses a suture offer during surgery and tension rises as she meets Myung Eun-won (Kim Hye-in), notorious as the “villain” of the main hospital.

Oh I-young suffers from Myung Eun-won’s relentless nitpicking and unreasonable workload, which shatters her self-esteem. Emotional conflicts with colleagues and patients pile up, causing her to doubt her qualifications as a doctor and fall into deep confusion. Myung Eun-won’s malicious criticism and pressure intensify, shaking I-young’s inner world.

Relationships with her peers, emotional labor between patients and guardians, and conflicts with seniors all come to the fore. The residents begin to understand each other at their first group dinner, each going through their own struggles and growing pains. I-young faces her own mistakes and limitations, gradually getting closer to her colleagues.

Nam Kyung-eun runs into Myung Eun-won by chance and hears advice about how residents are still being dragged around in reality. There are misunderstandings and small acts of revenge with nurses, and changes in relationships among the residents. Myung Eun-won’s influence and the hospital’s hierarchical order become even more pronounced.

The first group dinner at Jongno Yulje OB-GYN takes place. I-young and her peers, in a rare moment of excitement, briefly forget their daily stress and build camaraderie. Each interacts with professors, and the chemistry and personalities among the residents stand out. I-young gets drunk during the dinner and falls asleep in the restroom.

I-young confesses her feelings to senior resident Koo Do-won (Jung Joon-won) but is firmly rejected. Afterwards, a subtle three-way confrontation and tension develop between I-young, Do-won, and Myung Eun-won. Do-won also wavers after I-young’s confession, making the emotional lines between the characters more complex.

Nam Kyung-eun breaks up with her boyfriend of seven years and goes through a difficult time emotionally. I-young helps deliver a foreign patient’s baby and struggles through unexpected situations. The residents comfort each other as they each face their own growing pains. Kim Sa-bi is frustrated by an intern’s mistake, and the daily lives of the residents are filled with both tension and warmth.

When Kim Sa-bi is suddenly hospitalized, the residents stay by her side and reaffirm their friendship. Um Jae-il’s first love, Jang Gyeo-ul, makes a surprise appearance at the hospital, revealing Jae-il’s past. Nam Kyung-eun cares for her hospitalized mother, deepening her feelings for her family. Anesthesiologist Ham Dong-ho confesses to I-young, but she realizes her feelings are gradually leaning toward Do-won. By the end, a spark of romance appears between I-young and Do-won.

A filming crew enters the hospital, revealing the residents’ real daily lives. Kim Sa-bi has a nerve-wracking confrontation with a difficult second-year senior, and I-young grows weary from Myung Eun-won’s repeated criticisms. Um Jae-il shows warmth by covering for an intern’s mistake. Do-won’s brother and I-young’s sister-in-law suggest a family trip, bringing I-young and Do-won even closer. I-young and Do-won finally confirm their feelings for each other and officially start dating.

Conflicts with Myung Eun-won continue, and the residents each face crises in their roles. Tension among professors and the collaborative spirit among junior doctors are depicted. The I-young and Do-won couple officially begin dating, and the relationships among the residents become even stronger. Realistic hospital episodes, character growth, and the excitement of romance are intertwined.

Resident Playbook Ending explained

In “Someday, Wise Resident Life” (shortened as “Unseuljeon,” “Seuljeonsaeng”), I-young and Do-won start a secret relationship, trying not to get caught by their peers. However, as their relationship gradually becomes known, an awkward atmosphere develops. Do-won shows his sincerity by preparing marriage funds with savings he’s built up over five years. The residents share their worries and grow even more. Each person’s family conflicts and patient-related episodes are harmoniously portrayed.

Their secret relationship is exposed, leading to a heartfelt scene where they apologize to their friends. I-young wins the lottery and is set to receive a huge sum, but misses the payout deadline and cannot collect the money, resulting in a bittersweet situation. In the end, everyone is shown having grown into second-year residents, sharing rice cake soup for the New Year in a warm closing scene. The drama ends with the residents’ friendship, new challenges, and hope for the future.
