[Cdrama] Always Home plot summary ending & cast (树下有片红房子 2025)

Affectionately nicknamed “The Cozy Haven” by its international fanbase, Always Home is a heartwarming and deeply resonant coming-of-age drama that gently wraps viewers in the warmth of friendship, family, and the bittersweet passage of time. Premiering in early 2025, this series quickly became a quiet but undeniable gem among Chinese youth dramas, earning praise for its authenticity, emotional honesty, and understated storytelling. The story unfolds in the bustling city of Tianhe, where sixteen-year-old Chen Huan’er, a girl full of optimism and quiet strength, relocates with her parents due to her mother’s job transfer. There, she meets and befriends Jing Xi Chi, a soccer-loving boy with a heart as big as his dreams, and Song Cong, a top student whose family struggles add layers of complexity to his life. Together, these three form a steadfast trio, supporting each other through the joys and heartaches of adolescence, family changes, and personal growth.

What sets Always Home apart from other youth dramas is its unflinching commitment to portraying everyday life with all its small triumphs and quiet sorrows. The series avoids melodramatic twists in favor of honest, relatable moments—late-night study sessions, shared meals, whispered secrets, and the slow, sometimes painful, process of growing up. The drama’s title, Always Home, is more than just a phrase; it’s a feeling. For these characters, “home” is not a fixed place but a network of relationships, a sense of belonging that endures even as life takes them in different directions. The show’s gentle pacing, natural performances, and attention to detail—especially in its depiction of family dynamics and the small kindnesses that bind people together—make it a comforting and emotionally rewarding watch. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Chinese dramas or new to the genre, Always Home offers a heartfelt, slice-of-life experience that lingers long after the final credits roll.

Episode 1

At the age of sixteen, Tian Huan’er moves from Shushui to Tianhe due to her parents’ job relocation. On the day they move into the hospital staff dormitory, a bird flies over Huan’er’s head and poops on her. While Huan’er is standing there dumbfounded, a boy named Jing Chitu, wearing a soccer uniform, happens to pass by and laughs, pulling a tissue from his pocket and handing it to her, greeting her as a new neighbor. Just as Huan’er is about to introduce herself, Jing Chitu hears a sound from somewhere and rushes off, disappearing.

Huan’er transfers to Tianhe First Middle School and is full of expectations for her new school life. Disappointed that she isn’t given a chance to introduce herself, she answers “Shushui” when the class monitor asks where she’s from, but her classmates look blank, not knowing where that is. Jing Chitu, sitting in the front, adds that it’s the county farthest to the west, but when Huan’er looks, he’s already plugged in his earphones and buried his face in his desk.

At lunchtime, Huan’er is shocked to see everyone pulling out lunchboxes. Her desk mate, Qiqi, tells her there’s no school lunch and takes her outside to buy food. On the street, Jing Chitu walks by with a basketball and asks Qiqi to buy him some “Lu Jia Mo.” Huan’er realizes Jing Chitu is the PE monitor and whispers that he must be physically strong. Qiqi mistakenly thinks Huan’er is a top student and looks forward to the test the next day, but the results are that both of them are at the bottom—Huan’er is last, and Qiqi is second to last. Jing Chitu proudly shows off his test paper in front of them, and all three are called to the staff room, but Jing Chitu is praised while Huan’er and Qiqi are scolded.

When Huan’er returns home, she worries as she looks at her test paper. After practicing her excuses in front of the house, she finally gathers the courage to go inside, but her mother, Qian Lina, figures it out immediately. Instead of scolding her, her mother encourages her to keep trying. After dinner, her mother takes Huan’er to visit senior Lin Yifan’s house, where she finds out Jing Chitu is Lin Yifan’s son. Jing Chitu’s father, Jing Li, warmly welcomes them. Huan’er and Jing Chitu go to the kitchen to wash fruit, with Huan’er cutting it and Jing Chitu grabbing pieces to eat. Jing Chitu suggests that from tomorrow, Huan’er should walk to school with him and Song Chong.

The next morning, Huan’er wakes up early and excitedly leaves the house, meeting the calm and cool Song Chong. Huan’er hurriedly adjusts her attitude and greets him, and Jing Chitu introduces them, asking Song Chong to help Huan’er with her studies. Song Chong eats the “Caidan” Huan’er brought, and the three head to school together. At the school gate, they meet Qiqi, who is an old classmate of Song Chong’s but not very close. Qiqi shares cookies her father sent from abroad, and Song Chong goes to the international class.

During an open class, Huan’er is chosen to present but her accent makes everyone laugh. After school, Jing Chitu goes to the arcade, and asks Song Chong to help Huan’er study. Song Chong knows Huan’er was teased for her presentation and helps her correct her accent, encouraging her not to care about others’ opinions. The next day, Huan’er accidentally takes Song Chong’s notebook and goes to the international class to return it, finding the atmosphere cold and Song Chong looking uncomfortable there.

While Huan’er is in the bathroom, she overhears two girls mocking her as someone trying to seduce Jing Chitu and Song Chong. Huan’er cries in the stall, but Jing Chitu appears and chases the girls away. Huan’er pretends to be calm as she comes out, but the words stay with her. After that, Huan’er starts to distance herself from Song Chong. When her mother works late, Huan’er is told to eat at Jing Chitu’s house, but feeling bad, she says she already ate and runs around the school field to vent her emotions. Worried, Jing Chitu follows her and, realizing she hasn’t eaten, takes her to a special place.

Episode 2

Realizing Huan’er hasn’t eaten, Jing Chitu takes her to his and Song Chong’s secret hideout, which from then on also becomes Huan’er’s spot. Song Chong brings food for Huan’er, and Jing Chitu breaks the awkwardness with a few words. Song Chong continues to bring food and tells Huan’er to eat at his house whenever her mother works late. In this neighborhood, everyone knows each other, and eating at each other’s houses is normal.

Huan’er spends comfortable days at this house. Sometimes, when her mother is too busy to make breakfast, Song Chong brings breakfast his mother made, and Jing Chitu occasionally brings food from home, though his mother’s cooking isn’t great. The “Caidan” Huan’er makes is still unpopular among friends.

At some point, rumors start about Huan’er and Song Chong, and even Qiqi comes to ask about it. When Huan’er’s test scores improve, Qiqi wants to know her secret and suggests studying together. Huan’er happily agrees. Huan’er and Jing Chitu have dinner at Song Chong’s house again, and Song Chong’s mother’s cooking is still popular. Jing Chitu often teases Huan’er, leading to playful arguments while Song Chong quietly smiles. When Huan’er brings Qiqi, Jing Chitu sits quietly but still smiles. Song Chong’s mother cuts oranges and leaves to play mahjong with Huan’er’s mother, Lin Yifan, and Li Tian’s mother. Qiqi is surprised to see the parents know each other. Jing Chitu explains everyone is close here, but Li Tian’s father, being the hospital director, is stricter.

After studying, Huan’er walks Qiqi home and watches her get into a car. Qiqi usually doesn’t walk, but she doesn’t want to stand out and tries to blend in with her friends. Qiqi finds the warm atmosphere comforting, as she used to be alone. Huan’er understands Qiqi’s feelings, and they become close friends who rely on each other. When Huan’er says she likes the smell of Qiqi’s shampoo, Qiqi gives her a bottle as a gift. Huan’er is delighted… Li Tian ranks first on a test, and Li Tian’s mother invites everyone for a meal. Huan’er’s mother tells her to learn from Li Tian, but Li Tian is cold to her. Luckily, Song Chong appears and takes Huan’er away to study. Qiqi’s mother is angry that Qiqi studied with Song Chong without permission and threatens to hire another tutor. Qiqi has to refuse future study sessions. Li Tian and Song Chong are set to study abroad, and Qiqi’s family has also planned her future. Huan’er feels lost, seeing everyone else with clear plans.

Song Chong deeply agrees with Huan’er. Is a pre-planned life really happy? When Huan’er returns home, her father is back, and the family eats together. Huan’er asks her parents about her future, but they say health and happiness are most important and have no special plans.

Episode 3

Song Chong feels Huan’er is right and admits life in the international class isn’t enjoyable. Jing Chitu notices Song Chong listening to Huan’er. Song Chong applies to transfer to the regular class, but the international class homeroom teacher is confused. Many want the international class spot, so the teacher is shocked Song Chong wants to leave. Song Chong wins a competition, and Qiqi admires him. Qiqi has always liked Song Chong and hopes he’ll return her feelings someday. When Song Chong returns home, his parents look serious. His mother is angry after receiving a call from the homeroom teacher about his transfer. Their plan to send him abroad is ruined. Song Chong argues he can get into a good university without going abroad, and the family isn’t well-off, but his mother is still upset.

Song Chong confesses to Jing Chitu and Huan’er that he wants to go to the regular class and even considers medical school. Jing Chitu knows Song Chong’s parents oppose medical school but respects his choice. Song Chong and his parents argue, but he keeps persuading them. Huan’er visits Song Chong’s house, and as Song Chong cracks crab, they talk. Huan’er supports Song Chong’s choice but advises him not to fight too much with his parents. Then, Jing Chitu’s mother calls and asks Song Chong to cover for Jing Chitu playing soccer. Song Chong lies smoothly. Lin Yifan opposes Jing Chitu becoming a professional athlete due to past injuries, but Jing Chitu doesn’t give up his dream. Song Chong knows Jing Chitu understands his life best. Huan’er envies her friends for having clear dreams.

Song Chong’s mother complains to friends at the hospital cafeteria that Song Chong doesn’t understand her, but Li Tian’s mother responds cynically. Song Chong’s mother firmly says she’ll respect her child’s opinion. With Li Tian’s mother’s help, Song Chong’s mother tolerates his father calling the homeroom teacher. Song Chong successfully transfers to the regular class.

Huan’er goes to the field. Happy about Song Chong’s transfer, she becomes more interested in her own hobbies. Her impression of Jing Chitu changes—he seems careless, but is actually thoughtful. Parents try to understand their children, and the children pursue their own paths.

Song Chong joins the regular class with Jing Chitu. Jing Chitu’s parents oppose soccer even more.

Episode 4

Jing Chitu once injured his leg during soccer practice, so his mother forbids him from playing. Even when she allows it, he must promise not to get hurt again. His father understands his dream and secretly helps him go to the soccer field. Today, they go together, but his father tires quickly. As his mother is about to get off work, they rush home to clean up before she arrives.

When his mother returns, she warns Jing Chitu again not to participate in the upcoming sports day. Jing Chitu argues that as the PE monitor, he must join, but his mother refuses. Huan’er hears Jing Chitu arguing with his mother at home and realizes how hard it is for him. To support him, Huan’er texts him that she’ll run the 1500m for him. Jing Chitu is so happy he sticks his head out the window to thank her.

The next day, Huan’er asks Jing Chitu not to tell his mother she’s running. Jing Chitu thinks it’s no big deal but is excited Huan’er is participating. He brags to Song Chong that their class now has a secret weapon.

On sports day, classes 5 and 6 compete fiercely. Jing Chitu wins the boys’ sprint, and class 5 is relieved. Next is the girls’ 1500m. Huan’er stands at the starting line. At the gunshot, everyone starts running, and Huan’er keeps up at the front, enduring to the end. But as soon as she crosses the finish line, she collapses. Song Chong runs over, carries her to the infirmary, and the doctor says she fainted from low blood sugar, giving her an IV. Song Chong goes out to buy food for Huan’er, who wakes up and whispers to Qiqi that she needs a pad because she’s on her period. Qiqi rushes to the store and runs into Song Chong. Song Chong offers to pay, but is embarrassed when he sees Qiqi buying pads.

Classmates tell Huan’er she won first place, and everyone is happy. Huan’er wants to go to the awards ceremony, but while the doctor is away, Jing Chitu removes her IV. Class 5 students cheer for Huan’er and Jing Chitu, while class 6 is jealous. Even the usually cold Qiqi bravely stands up for Huan’er.

Huan’er and her friends eat with her mother. Her mother scolds her when she sees the needle mark and swelling on her hand. Huan’er calms her mother, and Song Chong and Jing Chitu feel she overreacted. Song Chong asks his mother if something happened to Huan’er before, but his mother only says she was sick once.

At school, there’s a book donation event. Qiqi invites Huan’er to her house to pick books. Huan’er is amazed by Qiqi’s huge library but decides to donate books she’s already read. Qiqi asks Huan’er to see which book Song Chong picks.

Episode 5

Huan’er can’t find suitable books at home and searches her mother’s room, where she’s recommended a professional book, “Neuropsychology.” Huan’er finds it quite interesting.

The next day, Jing Chitu and Song Chong wait for Huan’er early. Huan’er almost oversleeps because she stayed up reading. Jing Chitu is surprised to see Huan’er with her mother’s book. Huan’er says she learned a lot and experiments by pulling Jing Chitu’s ear. Song Chong understands her intention, but Jing Chitu thinks she’s joking, and the two run ahead.

At the book donation event, students pick books and anonymously donate them to the school library, letting fate decide who gets them. Qiqi knows Song Chong will pick “The Catcher in the Rye,” so she goes to the library early, but the class monitor takes it first. Qiqi writes on her blog that it feels like someone bought the clothes she wanted. Jing Chitu takes the short story collection Qiqi donated and asks Song Chong to write something touching on the first page. Huan’er recognizes Song Chong’s handwriting, and Qiqi smiles brightly when she finds out. Huan’er worries about where her “Neuropsychology” went.

Qiqi suggests studying with Huan’er at Song Chong’s house. Jing Chitu arrives late with chicken wings for Qiqi. Huan’er eats without hesitation. In a class test, Huan’er and Qiqi improve, but Jing Chitu is last. At the parent-teacher meeting, Jing Chitu’s mother is anxious about his report card, but Li Tian’s mother speaks for her.

After school, Jing Chitu is afraid to go home alone and takes Huan’er with him. His mother is about to scold him when she sees Huan’er and holds back. Jing Chitu apologizes and claims Huan’er is helping him study, then goes to his room. Huan’er is shocked by his test—he only did the first part and left the rest blank. When she asks, Jing Chitu confesses he didn’t want to do better than Qiqi. Huan’er feels the friendship is complicated.

When it’s time to choose between arts and sciences, Song Chong and Huan’er both pick science. Qiqi also wants to, but her mother has already decided on arts. Qiqi is afraid of being separated from Song Chong and Huan’er and doesn’t look forward to her birthday. After the last class, the monitor asks everyone to stay. A video plays, showing everyone celebrating Qiqi’s birthday. Qiqi is moved to tears.

Episode 6

At home, Huan’er sees Jing Chitu is depressed and knows he doesn’t want Qiqi to leave. Jing Chitu says he’s fine. During summer vacation, class 5 goes on a school trip. Huan’er calls Qiqi, who doesn’t want to go, but changes her mind when she hears the monitor and Song Chong are going. The next day, everyone boards the bus. Huan’er sits with the monitor, and Qiqi arrives just before departure, sitting in the back. Huan’er is happy Qiqi came, but Qiqi feels lonely watching Huan’er, Song Chong, and the monitor.

At the hotel, Huan’er and the monitor share a room, while Qiqi is alone. Huan’er worries Qiqi will be lonely and suggests all three share a room, offering to sleep on the floor. The three walk holding hands, and Song Chong finds it strange, but Jing Chitu says girls always do that.

The next day, the five go to the lake. There are three boats, so Huan’er divides them: Jing Chitu and Qiqi, Song Chong and the monitor, and herself alone. The boats race, but Huan’er can’t keep up alone. Jing Chitu keeps bumping into her boat, and Huan’er falls into the water. Jing Chitu rescues her, but she swallows a lot of water. Chiness Drama Always Home Review

Always Home follows Chen Huan’er, Jing Xi Chi, and Song Cong as they navigate high school, university, and early adulthood together. The story begins with Huan’er’s move to Tianhe, where she quickly befriends Jing Xi Chi and Song Cong. Over the years, they face various challenges: academic pressure, family illness, personal loss, and the complexities of growing up. The trio’s friendship remains a constant source of support, even as romantic feelings and misunderstandings arise.

The drama’s high school years are especially poignant, with a strong focus on the characters’ daily lives and the small moments that define their relationships. As they enter university and later the workforce, the story explores themes of ambition, responsibility, and the enduring bonds of friendship. The ending sees Chen Huan’er and Jing Xi Chi transitioning from friends to long-distance lovers, with a heartfelt proposal on Huan’er’s PhD graduation day.

There are no cookie scenes (post-credit scenes) in the traditional sense, but the series is filled with quiet, reflective moments that linger in the viewer’s memory. The interpretation of “home” in the drama is not limited to a physical place but extends to the emotional connections and sense of belonging that the characters create for each other.
