Episode 1

At the age of sixteen, Tian Huan’er moves from Shushui to Tianhe due to her parents’ job relocation. On the day they move into the hospital staff dormitory, a bird flies over Huan’er’s head and poops on her. While Huan’er is standing there dumbfounded, a boy named Jing Chitu, wearing a soccer uniform, happens to pass by and laughs, pulling a tissue from his pocket and handing it to her, greeting her as a new neighbor. Just as Huan’er is about to introduce herself, Jing Chitu hears a sound from somewhere and rushes off, disappearing.

Huan’er transfers to Tianhe First Middle School and is full of expectations for her new school life. Disappointed that she isn’t given a chance to introduce herself, she answers “Shushui” when the class monitor asks where she’s from, but her classmates look blank, not knowing where that is. Jing Chitu, sitting in the front, adds that it’s the county farthest to the west, but when Huan’er looks, he’s already plugged in his earphones and buried his face in his desk.

At lunchtime, Huan’er is shocked to see everyone pulling out lunchboxes. Her desk mate, Qiqi, tells her there’s no school lunch and takes her outside to buy food. Song Chong brings food for Huan’er, and Jing Chitu breaks the awkwardness with a few words. Song Chong continues to bring food and tells Huan’er to eat at his house whenever her mother works late. In this neighborhood, everyone knows each other, and eating at each other’s houses is normal.

Huan’er spends comfortable days at this house. Huan’er is moved by her parents’ love, and Jing Chitu hugs his mother, worried she feels left out.

Jing Chitu is envious of Huan’er’s family but is upset that Huan’er kept the surprise a secret. Huan’er explains it was her father’s idea. As Huan’er tries to leave, Jing Chitu grabs her and suddenly kisses her. Huan’er is surprised but kisses him back. After the passionate kiss, they walk home holding hands. Huan’er’s father sees them but thinks nothing of it.

At home, Huan’er and Jing Chitu wait for each other’s calls. Jing Chitu texts Huan’er, asking her to be his girlfriend. Huan’er calls him a fool, then texts back, “Goodnight, boyfriend.” Jing Chitu is overjoyed and jumps on his bed, almost breaking it.

Episode 26

The next morning, Jing Chitu visits Huan’er’s house early. Her parents are still asleep, so she lets him into her room. Jing Chitu is nervous and doesn’t know where to sit. When Huan’er’s father leaves, Jing Chitu panics and rushes home.

Huan’er and Jing Chitu discuss when to tell Song Chong and Qiqi about their relationship. Jing Chitu has already told Song Chong. When the four meet, Huan’er and Jing Chitu act affectionate, and Song Chong and Qiqi congratulate them.

Episode 27

In their third year of college, Huan’er and Jing Chitu return home for summer vacation. At home, Lin Yifan talks to Jing Chitu about responsibility and tells him to treat Huan’er well if he really likes her.

The next day, while their parents are out, Huan’er visits Jing Chitu. She says her parents’ relationship improved after her mother’s illness and hopes she and Jing Chitu can be happy together like them. Jing Chitu promises they will and kisses her. Huan’er’s father comes home and finds them together. He is furious and accuses Jing Chitu of stealing his daughter.

Jing Chitu tries to explain, but Huan’er’s father won’t listen. Huan’er’s mother says Jing Chitu is like their own child and that Huan’er will find someone she loves someday. Qiqi thinks deeply and calls Song Chong to meet. She says she wants to study abroad, and Song Chong understands. Qiqi says she changed a lot because of him but can’t keep up with his brilliance. Song Chong respects her choice, and they hug, ending their youthful romance.

Song Chong studies in his dorm and hears his roommate complain about the inefficiency of medical school. Song Chong’s mother sends him extra money, but he says he and Qiqi have broken up. He starts looking for part-time jobs.

Zhu Meng introduces Song Chong to a tutoring job. The student is studying ahead and says he doesn’t want to fall behind. Song Chong advises him not to rush. Song Chong returns to his room, and Zhu Meng goes out to take out the trash. He finds a middle-aged woman at the door, who asks for money. It turns out she is his mother, who left him as a child. Zhu Meng yells at her to leave, and his mother leaves without a word.

Song Chong hears Zhu Meng crying and takes him for a walk. Zhu Meng says he missed his mother as a child and that his father promised to find her if he won a stuffed animal from a claw machine. Song Chong gives Zhu Meng a coin and tells him to try the claw machine again, saying if he wins, he can talk to his mother honestly. Zhu Meng wins a drink and says it’s better not to have what isn’t his.

Huan’er finishes her thesis defense and graduates. The roommates have a final gathering, sad to say goodbye. Dong Huixin gives up on graduate school and gets a job at a pharmaceutical company in her hometown.

At graduation, Jing Chitu arrives and lifts Huan’er up in celebration. Jing Chitu’s “Angwu” website overcomes technical challenges and gains 500,000 users. Huandao Tech’s headquarters is impressed and sends Dr. Gong to supervise the project. Dr. Gong praises Jing Chitu and suggests moving the project to Beijing for better opportunities. Jing Chitu hesitates because it would mean three years apart from Huan’er, who is going to graduate school in another city. Huan’er says she’s fine with it and goes with Jing Chitu to his Beijing interview.

After the interview, Jing Chitu says the company is like a spider’s web. They meet Song Chong and Zhu Meng for dinner. Huan’er stays at Zhu Meng’s place, and Jing Chitu stays with Song Chong. Huan’er says she supports Jing Chitu’s move to Beijing and will visit him during breaks. Zhu Meng says true love is about trust and supports Huan’er.

Jing Chitu realizes that his business can be restarted, but he never wants to put Huan’er in danger again. He returns to Huan’er and tells her he will stay by her side. Huan’er is overjoyed and moves her things to Jing Chitu’s apartment. Jing Chitu and Zhu Ye work from home, and at night, Huan’er and Jing Chitu have their own time.

The high school friends gather again. You Xinlian has passed the civil service exam, Li Tian is engaged, Qiqi returns from abroad with a published book, and Song Chong and Zhu Meng smile at each other. They watch the video Jing Chitu made years ago, interviewing their dreams. Some dreams came true, some changed, but everyone is satisfied with their lives.
