Episode 7: Hangang Ramen (Episode 20)
What is Hangang Ramen? Hangang Ramen refers to ramen cooked using an instant noodle cooker that combines an electric stove and a water purifier. Also called “electric ramen,” it became popular at convenience stores in Hangang Park, earning the nickname “Hangang Ramen.” It offers a unique taste and experience distinct from ramen eaten at home or at snack bars, making it beloved by many.
The History of Hangang Ramen
- In the early 1990s and 2000s, ramen vending machines appeared briefly but did not gain much popularity.
- In the late 2000s, instant ramen cookers were introduced at Yeouido Hangang Park convenience stores, marking the real start of Hangang Ramen.
- In 2011, Seven Eleven installed ramen cookers at 13 stores within Hangang Park, sparking the full-scale Hangang Ramen craze.
- The initial price was 2,500 KRW, but by 2024, the price of a single bowl of Shin Ramyeon had risen to 4,800 KRW, reflecting a steady price increase.
Features of Hangang Ramen
- Use of Instant Cooker: You can cook ramen yourself using a cooker that combines an electric stove and a water purifier.
- Container Differences: Yeouido Hangang Park uses aluminum containers, while Ttukseom Riverside Park uses paper containers. The cooker shapes differ, but the taste remains similar.
- Water Amount & Cooking Time: Typically, 400–450ml of water is dispensed automatically, and the cooking time is short (about 3 minutes 30 seconds to 4 minutes). Young people prefer firmer noodles, so water and time are slightly reduced.
- Fun of Cooking & Unique Taste: The experience of cooking your own ramen, the Hangang scenery, and the high-temperature cooking all add to the appeal of Hangang Ramen.
- Popularity Among Foreigners: Hangang Ramen has become a popular “K-food” among foreign tourists as well.
Recommended Hangang Ramen Spots
- Banpo Hangang Park Sebitseom Convenience Store: Famous for its beautiful night view and as a ramen spot at sunset.
- Yeouido Hangang Park Convenience Store: Easy access and uses aluminum containers.
- Ttukseom Riverside Park Convenience Store: Good subway access, easy to move to the lawn, uses paper containers.
All three locations offer great accessibility, excellent Hangang views, and the option to enjoy ramen on a picnic mat on the grass.
- GS25 Hangang Ttukseom 1 Branch Address: 1F, 2260 Gangbyeonbuk-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul (Jayang-dong 427-13) 서울 광진구 강변북로 2260 1층 (자양동 427-13)
Hangang Ramen Price
- Regular ramen (Shin Ramyeon, Jin Ramyeon, etc.): 3,500–4,000 KRW
- Premium ramen (Shin Ramyeon Black, etc.): 4,000–4,800 KRW
Prices may vary by convenience store.
Hangang Ramen Recipe & Cooker Instructions
- Choose your ramen and pay; you’ll receive a container with a barcode and chopsticks.
- Scan the container’s barcode at the cooker and press the start button.
- Water is dispensed automatically, and the ramen cooks for a set time.
- Stir the noodles with chopsticks midway for better texture.
- When done, place the hot container on a tray to eat safely.
Caution: The cooker gets very hot. Do not touch aluminum containers with bare hands; always use the provided tray.
Tips for Enjoying Hangang Ramen
- Pair ramen with kimbap, triangle kimbap, or other simple lunchbox items for a more filling meal.
- On nice days, spread out a picnic mat on the lawn and enjoy ramen with chicken and beer while looking at the Hangang River.
- Be careful of burns when using the cooker, and always use a tray to move the container.
Even if some people haven’t tried it, there’s no one who’s tried it just once—Hangang Ramen is a nostalgic taste you’ll want to revisit. Recently, unmanned ramen vending shops have also appeared.
