Actress Nana entered the entertainment industry as a member of the girl group After School. Her acting career began with a cameo in the 2014 film Fashion King.

With her model-like looks and steady vocal delivery, she moved up from supporting roles to leading roles, winning the Excellence Award, Actress in a Miniseries at the KBS Drama Awards two years in a row, in 2019 and 2020.

She kept her hair long throughout her girl group days, but in her 30s she switched to a bob, and her image has grown more mature as a result.

Nana in Her After School Days

Nana was born on September 14, 1991, in Ochang-myeon, Cheongwon County, North Chungcheong Province. As a child she was frail and small, but she shot up in height in high school and developed a model-like frame. She even worked briefly as a model before joining a girl group.

In 2009 she entered the Super Model Contest, and when she reached the finals she went from idol trainee to After School member almost overnight. When After School released its second single on November 25, 2009, and she made her debut as a singer, she drew little attention at first. But airport photos that spread by chance, together with her sub-unit activities, showed off her high-pitched voice and unexpected charm, and her fan base grew quickly.

After honing her skills in Orange Caramel, she took on a bigger role in After School’s main activities once Raina and Kahi graduated, and she became the group’s center. In 2013 she fell on stage during a single promotion and injured her pelvis, which forced her to pause activities. Even so, she widened her range through featuring spots on other artists’ tracks and narration work.

A Cameo That Made Her Break Out: Fashion King

While still an idol, she made a cameo in Fashion King as the high school girl Kim Hae-na. She stood out enough to prove her potential as an actress, and from the Chinese drama Love Weaves Through a Millennium onward, she pursued acting alongside music. Her real breakthrough as an actress came with The Good Wife in 2016, where she played the investigator Kim Dan. It was her first acting role in a Korean drama, yet she handled it cleanly and made the character her own.

The Good Wife was a hit alongside Jeon Do-yeon, and Nana won the Rookie Award at the 2016 Asia Artist Awards. Unlike many other girl group idols, she brought out her own character even in her first project, and she shone more on screen than on stage. This became the turning point that led her to commit to acting.

Her Film Debut: The Swindlers

Riding the success of The Good Wife, she was cast alongside Hyun Bin and Yoo Ji-tae in The Swindlers, playing a female con artist who helps catch a fraudster. Her film debut drew more than 4 million admissions, and from that point on she was established as an actress.

After The Swindlers became a hit, she spent a long time weighing her next project. She chose the drama Kill It (original title Blue Eyes), playing Do Hyun-jin, a detective on a metropolitan investigation unit, and handled her first lead role competently opposite Jang Ki-yong. She then took on a range of characters in Justice, the film Confession, Memorials, and Oh My Ladylord, but the ratings left something to be desired.

Nana Finds Her Break on Netflix

After a stretch when hits eluded her, she appeared as one half of a duo with Jeon Yeo-been in Netflix’s Glitch and won praise. After Glitch, she played Kim Mo-mi in Episode 2 of Mask Girl, a woman who becomes a showgirl after plastic surgery, showing off her idol-era dance skills and her looks, and the series was a global hit.

The Scandal: Nana’s First Bed Scene

After Mask Girl, she slowed down a little with the drama Climax and the film Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy. She then returned to Netflix with The Scandal, a series based on a film, where she performed a bed scene for the first time since her debut. Some viewers felt the full nudity was a shame for an actress whose talent was already recognized, but the series hit No. 1 on Netflix as soon as it was released and was a commercial success.

Her next project is also a Netflix series, Ma Teresa, in which she returns as Ma Teresa alongside Kim Dan and Jung Gun-joo. She started as After School’s visual member, and her outspoken, quirky side on variety shows has won her fans’ affection. She is now the member of After School who has stayed popular the longest.

Actress Nana’s Beauty and Figure

On January 11, 2020, TC Candler named her No. 1 in its list of the 30 most beautiful faces of the 2010s (2010–2019), giving her looks worldwide recognition. After entering the chart at No. 2 in 2013, she never dropped out of the top 10, and her beauty is the stuff of legend.
