When Life Gives You Tangerines recap

Ae-soon, a young girl living in Jeju Island, has a complicated family history. After her father died, her mother, who is a haenyeo (female diver), remarried. So Ae-soon lives with her stepfather and his two children (her younger siblings). Ae-soon is staying at her uncle’s (her late father’s younger brother) and grandmother’s house, where she lives like a maid, eating meals with a sense of caution.

Ae-soon’s mother thinks that it would be better for Ae-soon to live with her uncle, who has some money, rather than living with herself, who barely makes a living by diving. So she sends Ae-soon to her uncle’s house. However, when she finds out that Ae-soon is being treated like a maid there, she gets very angry and brings Ae-soon back home.

Though it is a short time, her mother gives Ae-soon love and raises her. However, her mother passes away due to decompression sickness caused by her life as a haenyeo. Before dying, she advises Ae-soon, “Never become a haenyeo, never live as a maid in someone else’s house, and live doing what you want to do.”

Gwan-sik, who has followed Ae-soon since they were young, is not the son of a rich family, but he lives in a decent household. He is the type who works diligently at anything, whether it’s sports or business. He is steadfast, always looking only at Ae-soon, and is devoted to her like a servant, always supporting her.

As time passes, when Ae-soon turns 18, another woman comes into her house. Her stepfather brings in another woman, who even takes down her mother’s picture and clashes with Ae-soon over everything. So Ae-soon asks her stepfather to keep his promise to pay her college tuition if she raised her younger siblings, but in reality, he never intended to give her the money and didn’t have it anyway.

While this is happening, her uncle wants Ae-soon to get a factory job to help pay off the family’s debt. Ae-soon decides to leave Jeju Island, steals jewelry and clothes, and escapes to Busan with Gwan-sik on a boat in the middle of the night. When they arrive in Busan, Ae-soon and Gwan-sik pretend to be a newlywed couple and check into an inn.

Unfortunately, the inn they stay at is run by swindlers who serve alcohol and food to guests as a service, then steal all the guests’ belongings while they sleep. In the end, they lose all their luggage, get into a fight with the innkeeper, are taken to the police station, and are eventually brought back to Jeju by their parents.

Ae-soon is put in a situation where her parents try to marry her off to a wealthy ship captain, and Gwan-sik boards a ship to Seoul to study. However, in the end, Ae-soon runs to the port calling for Gwan-sik, and Gwan-sik jumps off the boat and swims to Ae-soon, and they embrace each other in a sea of tears.

Ae-soon and Gwan-sik’s relationship becomes even more complicated. Ae-soon deliberately acts cold for Gwan-sik’s future, and Gwan-sik decides to leave for the mainland to study. Ae-soon tries to stop him but the boat has already left, and Gwan-sik eventually jumps into the sea to return to Ae-soon. After a difficult reunion, their love faces the harsh realities of the villagers’ prejudice and poverty.

The two stand at a crossroads of important choices, and Ae-soon resolves to be with Gwan-sik. Gwan-sik has trouble finding work due to conflicts with the village head. Ae-soon seeks help from her grandmother, who, recalling Ae-soon’s mother’s request, gives Ae-soon a bankbook, a ring, and money to buy a boat. The deep love and sacrifice of family are revealed in this episode.

A typhoon and flood cause great damage to the Jeju village, and Ae-soon’s family also goes through difficult times. Ae-soon endures a tough daily life, raising her son Dong-myeong. Ae-soon runs for the position of the first female village head in Dodong-ri, fighting against the village’s corruption and authoritarianism. Meanwhile, her daughter Geum-myeong, who started college life in Seoul, is falsely accused of taking a proxy exam and faces many hardships, gradually growing through them.

Geum-myeong, as a poor student from the provinces, continues her difficult student life in Seoul, juggling work and study. She feels both resentment and guilt toward her parents, but begins to carve out her own life. The family continues to live frugally to support Geum-myeong, and their affection for one another is revealed. Geum-myeong accepts her reality and gradually matures.

Geum-myeong’s romance with Bu Young-beom begins in earnest, and the two spend sweet times together, but face opposition from both families and real-world obstacles. Ae-soon and Gwan-sik, while wishing for their daughter’s happiness, cannot hide their worries and anxieties as parents. During preparations for Geum-myeong and Young-beom’s wedding, Young-beom’s mother looks down on Ae-soon and Geum-myeong at the meeting, causing conflict.

Young-beom’s mother asks Ae-soon to stop the marriage, and shocked by this, Geum-myeong chooses to call off the engagement. After a long relationship, Geum-myeong accepts the breakup, but Young-beom has a hard time getting over her. Geum-myeong suffers for a long time after the breakup, but returns to her family, recovers her daily life with Ae-soon and Gwan-sik.

Ae-soon works various jobs to support the family, enduring a tough life, and Gwan-sik continues his difficult student life in Seoul, unable to forget Ae-soon. Ae-soon takes care of her younger siblings, recalls her mother’s last words, and contemplates her life. Gwan-sik misses his family and Ae-soon in Jeju, and decides to return to Jeju.

When Gwan-sik returns to Jeju, he reunites with Ae-soon.

When Life Gives You Tangerines ending

As the IMF financial crisis hits, Ae-soon’s daughter Geum-myeong is suddenly fired from her job. Now unemployed, Geum-myeong happens to visit the Cannes Theater where Chung-seop works. In fact, after his military discharge, Chung-seop has been working as an art academy instructor and has been visiting the theater every day to see Geum-myeong again. The two reunite, become a couple, and go down to Jeju to get permission for marriage. Gwan-sik initially looks at Chung-seop with suspicion, but seeing how much he cares for Geum-myeong, he opens his heart and gives his blessing.

After Geum-myeong and Chung-seop’s wedding, an incident happens to Ae-soon and Gwan-sik’s son Eun-myeong. When Eun-myeong’s friend commits fraud and disappears, Eun-myeong is blamed for the crime and ends up in prison. Gwan-sik sells his lifelong savings—his boat—to save Eun-myeong, and his father-in-law Sang-gil bribes the police to help. The two families work together to save Eun-myeong.

Eventually, Eun-myeong is released from prison and starts over from the bottom, selling buckwheat jelly and rice cakes. Gwan-sik invests all his remaining assets to open a restaurant, but since it’s in a remote area, it faces the risk of failure. An actress, Jung Mi-in, whom Gwan-sik once saved from the sea, helps promote the restaurant out of gratitude, and the business revives. Geum-myeong starts an education business, finds success, and has a child.

A period of peace comes to the family, but Gwan-sik is diagnosed with leukemia. Gwan-sik quietly prepares for the end of his life, recalling the times with Ae-soon, Geum-myeong, and Eun-myeong. Ae-soon finally achieves one of her lifelong dreams—becoming a poet, after her dreams of going to college, living on the mainland, and becoming a poet. In the end, Ae-soon publishes a poetry collection, and the title of that collection is “When Life Gives You Tangerines.”

When Life Gives You Tangerines ending Explained

When the main character Ae-soon was a child, her mother and grandmother made sacrifices for her. Later, as parents themselves, Ae-soon and Gwan-sik make sacrifices for Geum-myeong. They spend their entire lives giving up their own dreams for their child, and only in their twilight years do they finally achieve one wish—that is, the publication of the poetry collection “When Life Gives You Tangerines.”

This is a drama depicting the lives and loves of Jeju haenyeo. It is a story depicting the old days of Korea that we can’t even imagine now, but it is a story depicting the days when there was a barley pass. For some, memories… For some, love… And for some, mother… Netflix recommended dramas to watch after a long time, Bok-ssak, I was fooled, have fun watching.
