Already ranked world number one amateur, Jackson Koivun is the first golfer in history to sweep the NCAA Player of the Year award along with the Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award, and Jack Nicklaus Award all in the same span, and is already being compared to PGA legends.

In February 2026, he shot 20 under par over 36 holes, breaking Woods’ 1996 NCAA record.

Born May 23, 2005 in San Jose, California, USA, he learned golf from his father George and is a golf prodigy who first beat his father at age 7. He began golf on the 9-hole par-3 course at Santa Teresa Golf Club, later moving to Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, where he trained under assistant pro Fred Garcia.

In 2019 he won the UHY St. Louis Junior, and in 2021 he won the Northern California Junior Championship and the Jack Burke Jr. Invitational. During high school he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, won the 2022 Rolex Tournament of Champions, and competed as part of Team USA at the Junior Presidents Cup, contributing to the win. That same year he finished runner-up at the Junior Players Championship.

In 2023 he began with a win at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship, advanced to the round of 8 at the U.S. Amateur, and enrolled at Auburn University that same year. In 2024, as an Auburn freshman, he won the SEC Championship, the Wake Forest Invitational, and the Invitational Intercollegiate.

At the NCAA Division I Men’s Individual Championship, he lost to Hiroshi Tai by one stroke to finish co-runner-up, but led Auburn to a perfect 7-0 record in match play, contributing to the school’s first-ever NCAA Championship team title.

Thanks to his remarkable performance, he swept SEC Freshman of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, and the awards given to the top amateur — the Ben Hogan Award, Jack Nicklaus Award, Fred Haskins Award, and Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year Award. As part of his Jack Nicklaus Award eligibility he played in the Memorial Tournament, making his PGA Tour debut and making the cut. He also competed for Team USA at the Arnold Palmer Cup, leading the American team to victory.

In 2025 he won the SEC Golf Championship stroke play and the NCAA Auburn Regional. Competing as an amateur on the PGA Tour, he posted a T6 at the ISCO Championship, a T5 at the Wyndham Championship, and a T4 at the Procore Championship, showing he could hold his own against PGA professionals.

He made his major debut at the 2025 U.S. Open (Oakmont) but missed the cut; however, he tied for 4th at the NCAA Division I Championship, fulfilled the 20-point requirement of the PGA Tour University Accelerated Program, and secured full PGA Tour membership as a college sophomore. As the world’s #1 ranked amateur, he received the Mark H. McCormack Medal in August, and competed for Team USA at both the Arnold Palmer Cup and the Walker Cup, leading the American team to victory in both.

In 2026 he won the Amer Ari Invitational, the Gator Invitational, The Hayt, the Mason Rudolph Championship, the Ford Collegiate, and the SEC Golf Championship stroke play. Notably, at the Amer Ari Invitational in February, he shot rounds of 62, 62, and 67 for 25-under par, breaking Woods’ 1996 NCAA record for fewest strokes over 36 holes, and became the first NCAA player to shoot in the 62s twice.

His win at the Gator Invitational set Auburn’s all-time career wins record (7 wins), and at the SEC Championship he shot 19-under par (191) to win for a third consecutive year, setting the third-lowest total SEC scoring record in college golf history.

He won the Ben Hogan Award in May and the Haskins Award for a second time in June. At the 2026 U.S. Open, he finished T23 as low amateur, making the cut at a major for the first time in his career, and turned pro as a full PGA Tour member. He missed the cut in his pro debut at the John Deere Classic, but followed with a T10 at the ISCO Championship, then shot a bogey-free 10-under 61 in the third round of the 3M Open in July, earning his first career win in just his 3rd start and pushing his FedEx Cup ranking up to 70th.

In his post-round interview, he said he felt nervous seeing his own name atop the leaderboard, but that making back-to-back pars settled him back into a share of the lead, and that he reminded himself he needed to keep playing aggressively until the end because the course offered so many birdie chances.

His driver distance is around 310 yards, and while not overpowering off the tee, he is a short-game standout with no notable weaknesses. Even as an amateur he showed dominant scoring ability, posting the lowest NCAA adjusted scoring average (67.3) in his freshman season at Auburn in 2024, and he holds the school record with a career scoring average of 68.89 and a season average of 68.20 (2025-26 season). His 11 career individual college wins are also an Auburn all-time record.
