Michael Thorbjornsen won the 2018 U.S. Junior Championship at age 16 and drew attention the following year by making the cut at the U.S. Open.

His driving distance is around 310 yards, and he is a player known for enormous inconsistency, either missing the cut or finishing in the top 10.

In 2022, as an amateur, he showed enough ability to finish 4th at the Travelers Championship, but missed the cut in every other event that year.

After finishing 1st in the 2024 PGA Tour University Ranking—awarded to the top-performing college player—he joined the PGA Tour and finished runner-up in just his third event, but continued to swing between extremes in results due to inconsistent performance until achieving his first career win at the 2026 Rocket Classic.

Michael Thorbjornsen Golf

Born on September 16, 2001, in Cleveland, Ohio, he first picked up golf at age two. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he moved with his family to Massachusetts in 2006, and was named IMG Golf Player of the Year twice during his three years at IMG Academy.

He later returned to his hometown of Wellesley and, representing Wellesley High School, won the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship held at Baltusrol Golf Club, defeating Joe Highsmith in the quarterfinals before advancing to the final and winning, which brought him national attention as a rising star. This win earned him a spot in the 2019 U.S. Open, where he became the first former U.S. Junior Amateur champion to make the cut at the U.S. Open.

In the fall 2019 season, as a member of his high school golf team, he finished runner-up in the individual competition at the Division 1 State Championship, one stroke behind Preston Jones. In 2019, he was named Wellesley High School Golf MVP, and he graduated in 2020.

He enrolled at Stanford University in 2020 and joined the Cardinal golf team, finishing with a four-year career scoring average of 70.40, the third-best in program history, along with 3 tournament wins, three All-America honors (First Team in 2023 and 2024, Second Team in 2022), and three All-Pac-12 First Team selections (2022, 2023, 2024).

He finished 2024 ranked 1st in the PGA Tour University Ranking, becoming the second player in history, after Ludvig Åberg, to earn PGA Tour membership through the top ranking spot, which secured him status for the remainder of the 2024 season and full PGA Tour playing privileges for the 2025 season.

He turned professional in June 2024, and finished runner-up in just his third event as a professional at the John Deere Classic. He also finished runner-up, one stroke back, at the April 2025 Corales Puntacana Championship. On August 2, 2026, in the final round of the Rocket Classic, he shot a season-best 63 to claim his first career PGA Tour win.

The Rocket Classic is the venue where, since its inaugural event in 2019, Nate Lashley—a former real estate agent ranked 353rd in the world who entered as the third alternate—claimed his first career win. In 2025, South African long-hitter Aldrich Potgieter earned his first career win there, with Thorbjornsen following in his footsteps in 2026.

Starting the final round four strokes back, he sank a 12-foot birdie putt to post a daily-best 9-under-par round, and on the final 18th hole, he sank the longest putt of the tournament—a 25-foot birdie—to claim a surprise victory at 18-under-par 262.
